Epic Guitar Showdown: Nuno Bettencourt Joins Nerd halen for a Fiery ’Hot For Teacher’ Tribute
In an electrifying moment captured on video, renowned guitarist Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme took the stage with Nerd Halen, a tribute band, during the 2025 Monsters of Rock Cruise. This performance offered a glimpse into an alternate universe where Weezer’s Blue album might not have achieved its iconic status.
As the sole performer without glasses, Nuno exuded a laid-back vibe while effortlessly shredding through some of Van Halen’s most celebrated riffs.
Alongside him was Extreme’s bassist pat Badger, who skillfully emulated Michael Anthony’s signature backing vocals, and Nerd Halen’s regular guitarist, Caleb Rapoport. During the guitar solo, Rapoport humorously bowed in a “we’re not worthy” gesture, clearly in awe of the performance unfolding before him.
A Familiar Tune with a Fresh Twist
this isn’t Nuno’s first time tackling Hot for Teacher. He previously showcased his skills during a 2023 interview with Rick Beato, where he played a portion of the song on a Stratocaster. Additionally, he made an impromptu appearance with another Van Halen tribute band, the Atomic Punks, at the 2015 Monsters of Rock Cruise. Though, this time,it was evident that Nuno had mastered the song for this particular performance.
Delivering many of Eddie Van Halen’s iconic licks with precision, Nuno made the notoriously challenging intro tapping section appear effortless. There were only a few instances, such as the ascending note sequence midway through the solo, where he seemed to improvise.
Remarkably, Nuno’s tone echoed Eddie’s style, showcasing less of his usual palm-muted percussiveness and a fluidity that was reminiscent of Van Halen himself. His execution of Eddie’s rapid pull-offs to the open B string was strikingly similar to the late guitar legend.
In a rare departure from his signature Washburn N4, Nuno opted to play a striped EVH Bumblebee replica borrowed from caleb Rapoport for this performance.
Guitar Enthusiasts Take Note
Guitar aficionados will recognize that this isn’t a standard EVH Striped Series model. The partial pickguard, visible pickup routing, and distinctive white ‘tone’ knob suggest it’s a refinished EVH Frankie or Frankenstein Relic. On Instagram, Caleb affectionately refers to it as his “Bumblestein” build.
Nuno has expressed his admiration for the bumblebee color scheme, owning a custom N4 that replicates this iconic finish. “That was my favorite Eddie guitar ever,” he has remarked. “It was always the most magical one.”
Caleb Rapoport was particularly moved by Nuno’s performance, sharing on Instagram: “The Great One played my guitar through my rig with my band last night, and I’m still trying to process it.” He added,“Thank you @nunobettencourtofficial for the thrill of hearing you play Hot For Teacher with The Mighty @nerdhalen. Unforgettable.”
Since acquiring his bumblebee N4, Nuno has been incorporating Van Halen classics into his live sets with Extreme, performing tracks like Mean Street and Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love.
In related news, Alex Van Halen has sparked debate by suggesting the use of AI to finish Eddie’s unfinished recordings, a topic that has generated considerable discussion among fans and musicians alike.
