Simon McBride Reflects on Deep Purple’s Heavy Renaissance
Simon McBride has been a part of Deep Purple for nearly four years,a reality that still feels surreal to him. “In my first year, every time I saw my name linked to Deep Purple, it just didn’t register,” he shares with Guitarist. This sentiment lingered through his debut album with the band, 2024’s =1. Though, with the release of their latest album, Splat!-the band’s 24th studio effort-it’s evident that McBride has truly found his place within the legendary group.
The Power of Unity in Sound
“What stands out for me is the sheer power of the sound,” McBride explains. “It’s about everyone playing together in harmony, like a freight train barreling down the tracks.” He draws parallels to the iconic chemistry of past members Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord, as well as Steve Morse and Don Airey. “Steve is an astonishing guitarist, but he brings a different vibe.My goal was to capture that massive, impactful sound.”
McBride utilizes his live rig, the [Neural DSP] quad Cortex, for most of the Deep Purple material. “I know some Ritchie Blackmore fans might be upset about the digital gear, but it’s fantastic,” he admits.
A Heavy Sound Echoing the Past
Critics and fans alike are heralding Splat! as deep Purple’s heaviest album in decades, reminiscent of their early ’70s classics. “Everyone is in great spirits, and we’re excited to continue doing what we love,” McBride says. “These guys have been at it as the ’60s, so it’s a privilege to share the stage with them. My name is now part of Deep purple’s legacy, and I take great pride in that.”
Creating Without Constraints
When asked about the album’s heavy direction, McBride clarifies, “There wasn’t a formal meeting to decide this. You put the five of us in a room, and that’s what naturally emerged. Many say it sounds like classic Deep Purple, and my roots in ’80s hard rock likely influenced that.”
he emphasizes that there was no intention to replicate the sound of early Deep purple albums like Machine Head. “If you approach it with that mindset, you’ll end up with something forced,” he laughs. “We just jammed and had fun.”
Reflecting on his evolution within the band, McBride notes, “Now that I’m more established, there’s a relaxed atmosphere among us. The difference between this album and my first, =1, is critically important. Initially, I felt immense pressure to deliver something remarkable. This time, I thought, ‘Let’s just play and see where it takes us.’”

Simon McBride Discusses Gear and Creative Process with Deep Purple
What new gear have you discovered as joining Deep Purple?
since becoming a member of Deep Purple, I’ve had to adjust my sound to complement Don Airey’s keyboard work, particularly his use of the Hammond organ and Leslie speaker, which occupy a similar sonic space as the guitar. To enhance my guitar’s presence,I collaborated with the team at Engl,who crafted Steve Morse’s signature amplifier.Although it has more controls than I prefer, it’s an excellent amp. They provided me with an Artist Edition head, which I had modified to boost the lower mids and low-end frequencies.
Recognizing that the Leslie and Hammond lack those frequencies, I aimed to carve out my own sonic niche that would allow my guitar to stand out while still delivering a powerful sound during our performances.
Are PRS Guitars Still Your Go-To?
This guitar is like a wild beast. It’s challenging to control due to its incredible natural sustain.
Absolutely. For this album, I used a prototype from PRS that doesn’t include a truss rod. This design harks back to the early days of guitar-making, as I believe that truss rods can diminish a guitar’s tone and sustain.
This particular guitar is quite dynamic and can be arduous to manage because of its natural sustain. I prefer not to use high-output pickups. The acoustic difference without a truss rod is significant; the neck must be constructed from the strongest wood available, as it remains perfectly straight.
During our studio sessions, producer Bob Ezrin noticed immediately when I switched to a different guitar. Within seconds, he halted the recording and said, “Something’s off…” When I explained I had changed guitars, he insisted, ”I don’t like it. Bring back the othre one.” This prototype is incredibly versatile, but it’s not yet available for public release; Paul Reed Smith is still refining it.
As for pedals, I could go on for hours about my collection!

What about your pedal setup?
I maintain the same tone for both rhythm and lead sections, with the only distinction being the addition of a line booster. I utilize a Jam Pedal called the Boomster for clean boosts, along with several Boss delay and reverb pedals, and I have an old MXR Phase 90.
Interestingly, one of the more unexpected pieces in my setup is a DigiTech Ricochet, which functions like an automatic Whammy pedal. I use it for unique effects and to add splashes of color to our sound.
When I compose riffs, I always aim for simplicity. Overcomplicating things can strip away the energy and excitement.
Insights on the Track Arrogant Boy
The genesis of Arrogant Boy occurred during a live performance when I showcased a quick guitar solo to energize the audience. In the studio, I revisited that moment, and as Don joined in, the main riff for the song emerged.
Roger Glover mentioned that this process was reminiscent of how Highway Star came together. I have a deep affection for Arrogant Boy; it features some wonderfully indulgent instrumental sections from both Don and myself!

What about the track Diablo?
The inception of Diablo occurred during a jam session between Don and me. Don initially crafted the riff on the keyboard, and as we transitioned to the verse, I introduced a straightforward pattern. I always strive for simplicity in my riffs; overcomplicating them can diminish their energy and excitement.
How did Keith urban get involved in the track?
We recorded at a studio owned by Keith Urban in Nashville, and we suggested he contribute a guest solo to one of our tracks. He was excited about the idea and crafted a solo section. I recalled a collaboration on one of Steve Lukather’s albums where he, Steve Stevens, and jan Hammer exchanged solos, which I thought was a fantastic concept. I envisioned a similar dynamic with two guitarists and keyboards, and it turned out quite well.
Keith brings a distinct sound to the table,with a more vintage vibe compared to mine. Once Ian Gillan added his vocals, the track transformed into a complete song. In my mind, all these pieces start as instrumentals untill I hear the final mix.

What’s your standout guitar moment on Splat!?
One of my favorite tracks has to be Jessica’s Bra. The title is a bit of a mystery-originally, it was meant to be Jessica’s Bar, but it got mixed up, and Ian Gillan found it amusing, so we decided to keep it.I had actually forgotten to record a solo while we were in Nashville, and when I returned home, Bob Ezrin sent me an email saying, “You need to lay down a solo.”
For some reason, I felt inspired to experiment with various techniques I typically wouldn’t use, like tapping and sliding. I think this creativity stemmed from listening to the entire song with lyrics, which sparked my inventiveness.
What Lies Ahead for you and deep Purple?
As for Deep Purple, there are discussions about another album, so we’re not slowing down anytime soon. This year, we’re on the road until December, with an impressive 86 shows lined up. We also have performances scheduled for next year, making for a packed agenda. Eventually, this journey will come to an end, but for now, we’re focused on what we love most: creating and performing music.
On a personal note, I’ve just wrapped up an instrumental album that’s about to enter the mixing stage. It should be released later this year or early next year. I might even do a few shows to promote it, though I’ll need to see if I can handle the complexity of the material[[[[laughs].
