Steve Vai Celebrates Pete Thorn: A Master of Rhythm Guitar
“You might be astonished at how challenging it is indeed to find a prominent rock guitarist who can play rhythm in perfect pitch,” remarks Steve Vai.
As Vai and Joe Satriani embark on their new musical venture, SatchVai, they faced the unique task of selecting band members to complement their lead guitar prowess.Among the rhythm guitarists who caught Vai’s attention, Pete Thorn stood out. With an remarkable resume that includes collaborations with artists like Melissa Etheridge and Don Henley, Thorn is also a well-known YouTube personality recognized for his insightful gear reviews.
“I’ve held Pete Thorn in high regard for quite some time,” Vai shared in a recent conversation with Cassius Morris. “He’s like a soldier, a true guitar soldier.”
Vai expressed particular admiration for Thorn’s knack for delivering rhythm parts that are “in tune.” He elaborated, “Some guitarists strike the strings in a way that creates a stunning explosion of sound, reminiscent of Angus Young or, surprisingly, Kurt Cobain.”
Angus Young himself has previously emphasized the significance of rhythm guitar, while Joe Satriani has acknowledged Cobain’s often-underappreciated guitar skills.
“Increasing the gain makes it more arduous to achieve a clean sound with chords,” Vai continued. “But Pete is a true master at navigating that challenge.”
Thorn first came onto Vai’s radar through his YouTube channel, which he launched over a decade ago. “I started noticing him while he was demoing equipment, and I thought, ‘Wow, that tone is fantastic,’” Vai recalled. “he checks all the boxes.”
“His lead guitar work is stunning, and his intonation is impeccable. He’s like a steadfast soldier, providing a solid foundation for everything,” Vai added.
Thorn recently reflected on how Vai’s kindness left a lasting impression on him, especially following the tragic passing of Chris Cornell in 2017. At that time, Thorn was Cornell’s friend and touring guitarist, grappling with the loss when a friend invited him to the Malibu Guitar Festival to help lift his spirits.
“It was just two days after Chris had passed away,” thorn recounted to Guitar World. “A friend who worked with Steve invited me to get out of the house.” Despite his grief, Thorn attended the event, where he was later invited backstage to meet Vai.
“Steve gestured for me to come over and sat down with me. He said somthing along the lines of, ‘I know you lost your friend, but you can still maintain a connection with him. It’s too soon now, but in time, you’ll think of him and it will bring you joy and good memories.’”
“I will never forget that moment,” Thorn reflected. “Here I was, mourning a close friend and collaborator, and a hero of mine since childhood took the time to console me… That’s the essence of Steve.”
Thorn is among a select group of guitarists who have earned praise from Vai. In recent years, he has also lauded Matteo Mancuso, a rising star known for his extraordinary fingerstyle technique.
Nita Strauss shared that Vai, a important influence on her as a young guitarist, has been incredibly supportive of her career. “He sends me emails from time to time,” she told Rock Antenne,“saying things like,‘Look! There’s a fantastic article about you in Guitar World.’”
the SatchVai tour is set to kick off in England on June 13. Vai mentioned that he and Satriani have been “intensely writing” new music together, which is a new experience for him.
“It’s wonderful because I’m not typically a collaborator when it comes to my solo projects,” he explained. “Though, I excel at collaboration when I understand the project, the people involved, and what’s expected of me. Working with Joe feels like pure bliss as he’s an exceptional collaborator as well.”
