“I found this guitar at Black Market Music in San Francisco while mixing either The Faculty in 1998 or Spy Kids in 2000 at skywalker Ranch. It just caught my eye,” he adds.

Rodriguez recounts a memorable moment when he had Link Wray sign the Gretsch Viking. “The resurgence of his music can be traced back to my film Road Racers, which I made just before Pulp Fiction.It was a tribute to Wray,” he explains.”I included several of his songs in Road Racers, and when Quentin Tarantino learned I had licensed them for a low cost, he featured two in pulp Fiction, which reignited Wray’s career.”
“When I met Link in Austin in ’97, I told him how I had included his music in my film, and he expressed his gratitude, saying, ‘You’re the reason I made a comeback!’” Rodriguez recalls fondly.

Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Legacy
Among Rodriguez’s prized possessions is a 12-string guitar that once belonged to the legendary Stevie Ray vaughan. “This guitar was gifted to me after I helped a friend at a movie studio with some filming. They were so appreciative that they bought it for me at an auction. It’s one of the finest guitars in my collection,” he shares.
As a proud Texan, Rodriguez has always admired Vaughan’s work. “I got into music in 1979, a monumental year for guitar.I was captivated by artists like Mark Knopfler and Van Halen, but when Stevie Ray Vaughan emerged, it changed everything for me,” he recalls.

Over the years, Rodriguez has received numerous guitars as gifts, including a 1964 Fender Stratocaster from movie financiers and a striking cherry Gibson Les Paul on the set of Grindhouse. He even received a model from Kirk Hammett of Metallica. “Kirk gifted me his LTD nosferatu after visiting to see some of my Frank Frazetta paintings,” he recalls.

“This Teye azteca is stunning,” Rodriguez remarks.”During the production of Once Upon a Time in Mexico, I collaborated with local guitarist Teye Wijnterp, who created intricate, dremeled metal-finish guitars.”
