As the 47-year-old artist shares, this approach was crucial. He recorded each track using a 1940 Martin 0-17 at the iconic Electric lady Studios, which also served as the inspiration for his two new signature acoustic guitars, crafted in collaboration with a skilled luthier from pennsylvania.
The 1940 martin 0-17: A Game Changer
Can you tell us about the pre-war 0-17 featured on Foxes in the snow?
During my time in New York, I was living in my girlfriend’s apartment. While I have a collection of guitars back in Nashville, I needed something compact for the city. I discovered a 1940 0-17 at my favorite shop in Brooklyn, RetroFret, and decided to purchase it for writing and practice.
When it came time to record, I brought along several acoustics, including a pre-war D-18, but quickly realized that the 0-17 outperformed the others in terms of sound quality.
The unique tonal space of the 0-17 was a significant factor; it’s not overly loud or booming, which works beautifully when paired with just vocals. The D-18, while powerful, tended to overshadow everything else.
Why the 0-Style Shape?
What drew you to the 0-style shape instead of a dreadnought for your signature model?
Being 6 feet 1 inch tall, I find that playing a dreadnought while singing can be cumbersome due to its size.For recordings that emphasize guitar, the single-0 shape is much more manageable.
“For guitar-centric records with a lot of instrumental focus, the single-0 size is ideal for me.”
This new signature model is perfect for singer-songwriters performing solo, as it complements the vocals without overpowering them.

Let’s discuss your premium 0-17 signature model. It features solid sinker mahogany, correct?
Absolutely. This wood has been submerged for thousands of years, and once retrieved from riverbeds, it undergoes a careful drying process.The fact that it performs so well is quite remarkable.
While I own several vintage acoustics, I prefer not to tour with them. Finding a new guitar that captures their essence sonically is incredibly convenient. The 0-17 avoids the harsh, brittle upper midrange typical of new guitars, offering the volume and punch of fresh wood while maintaining a warm tone.
Indeed, the scalloped bracing contributes to its volume. It’s surprising how much sound can come from such a compact instrument.
This guitar is versatile enough for various styles. As a guitar enthusiast, I strive to have a quality example of every type of instrument I need. If I were to perform solo acoustic shows, this would be my go-to guitar.
Is the neck of the 0-17 also made from sinker mahogany?
Yes, it features a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge. One of the challenges for Martin was replicating the neck shape, as the pre-war models were all hand-carved.
The original 0-17 has a distinctive neck shape, with a more pronounced ‘V’ as you move down. The team at Martin worked diligently to get it just right, and they succeeded beautifully.

The design allows ample space for my fingers,thanks to a wider nut width. Balance is crucial; when strumming, individual notes can get lost, especially in fingerstyle playing. It’s essential that every note, like B and D, maintains a consistent volume and intensity, similar to how a piano operates.
Comparing the Original 1940 0-17 to Your Signature Model
what distinguishes your signature guitar from the original 1940 0-17?
Interestingly, the pickguard on my vintage 0-17 was replaced early in its life with a slightly larger one. When Fred Greene from Martin reached out about my signature model, he suggested using the ‘correct’ pickguard. Though, I opted to keep the one from my original guitar to ensure the replica was as authentic as possible.
The only notable difference is the finish. While we aimed for a close match, replicating the luster of an aged guitar is a challenge that will improve over time.

Accessibility with the 0-10E Retro Model
Was it essential for you to create a more affordable version of your signature model with the 0-10E Retro?
Absolutely. I’ve spent considerable time playing both models, and honestly, the more affordable version is impressive. It intonates well and plays smoothly. The neck is slightly smaller and faster, likely due to its factory production rather than being handmade.
When I released my signature D-18 a few years back, it was a high-end model with a limited run. With these new guitars, I wanted to offer one that is collectible and made in smaller quantities, alongside another that is accessible to a broader audience, rather than settling for a mediocre middle ground.
I’m genuinely pleased with the 0-10E Retro. I was surprised by its acoustic sound quality, and it also features electronics that deliver excellent sound when plugged in, making it highly versatile.

Design Process and Collaboration
Did it require numerous meetings and prototypes to finalize these guitars?
No, we streamlined the process with just a few discussions. Much of that efficiency is thanks to Fred, who has collaborated with me on various guitars before and understands my vision.
When it comes to replication, I prefer it to be as accurate as possible. Fred is well aware of my preferences for vintage guitars, which I favor for their feel and sound. The current quality of Martin’s craftsmanship also contributed to the smooth process.

Unique Guitar Conditioning Techniques
You have an captivating habit of playing loud music to break in your new acoustics. Does this really help with the tone?
While I can’t quantify it scientifically, I find that new guitars sound quite different when first taken out of the case.To help with this, I place the guitar in front of speakers and play music with a strong bass presence, like OutKast, to keep the wood vibrating.
there are now devices designed to achieve this effect by placing them in the soundhole to maintain constant vibrations. In the past, I would set my guitar on a table and use an ebow on either the D or G string until the battery died. although I haven’t conducted any formal tests,I believe this technique helps accelerate the break-in process.

What is your personal connection to Martin guitars?
I’ve always regarded martin guitars with immense respect. As a child, I owned a lawsuit guitar-one of those replicas from the late ’70s when many were imitating Martin’s designs.
My admiration for Martin began early. I remember my uncle bringing over his herringbone D-28, and we would all take turns playing it. that experience left a lasting impression on me; I thought, “This is the pinnacle of guitar craftsmanship. This is the finest instrument one could play.”
First Martin Guitar Experience
Can you recall the first Martin guitar you owned?
absolutely. After our van was broken into in Dallas, my acoustic guitar was among the stolen gear. I reached out to Martin to inquire about a loaner, and they proposed an artist deal instead.
The first Martin I acquired was a D-41, which I used extensively while touring.Though, I found the inlay to be a bit excessive for my taste. Since then, I’ve transitioned to D-18s, as I prefer a more understated aesthetic. that initial D-41 was a significant milestone for me, and I believe I got it at half price since I wasn’t actively promoting Martin at that time!
