Godsmack’s Sully Erna: Embracing a New Chapter with Godsmack 2.0
While some critics claim that rock music is fading, Sully erna, the dynamic frontman of Godsmack, is brimming with enthusiasm. “Rock is making a comeback, man! Let’s get this party started!” he exclaims as he gears up for an exciting summer tour alongside Stone Temple Pilots and Dorothy.
As he embarks on what he dubs “Godsmack 2.0,” Erna is adapting to significant changes following the retirement of guitarist Tony Rombola and drummer shannon Larkin in 2025. This transition marks a pivotal moment for the band.
“You’re going to be impressed with our new members,” Erna assures fans. “Sam Koltun, our new guitarist, is incredibly talented. He elevates our sound both visually and musically.”
reflecting on his own contributions to Godsmack’s multi-platinum success, Erna humbly states, “I’m not the most technical player out there; I’m just a guy who loves music. It’s amusing to be featured in Guitar World when I feel like I’m just a donkey who doesn’t know much about guitars!”
Despite his modesty, Erna possesses a keen ear for sound. “I know what resonates with me,” he admits.”I have a strong sense of what I want my guitar to convey.” He understands his role within the band: “It’s about being a solid rhythm player, allowing the lead guitarist to add the intricate details.”
Godsmack’s journey has been anything but predictable. From contemplating retirement to fulfilling a long-held dream of releasing a double-live album, Live at Mohegan Sun, Erna reflects, “It’s about setting the stage one last time and seeing where it leads us.It could go down,or it could soar to stadium levels.Life is full of surprises.”
From Retirement Talks to New Beginnings
Just a few years ago, rumors circulated about Godsmack’s potential retirement. What shifted? “There was definitely discussion, especially when shannon and Tony announced their departures. Robbie Merrill and I had to decide whether to disband or continue with new members. We chose to keep the momentum going,” Erna explains.
Welcoming new Talent
“The energy with Sam Koltun and Wade Muff has injected fresh inspiration into the band. It feels revitalizing! We’re aiming to elevate our sound, but if it feels too different,we’ll embrace it and walk away without regrets,” he shares.
Erna emphasizes that there’s no animosity with Rombola and Larkin. “We parted on good terms. They simply wanted to spend more time with their families after nearly three decades of touring. we hold nothing but respect for them.”
“Losing a player like Tony is tough,” he admits.”He was an exceptional guitarist, capable of playing anything I threw at him. His contributions to Godsmack’s legacy are invaluable.”
What made Koltun the right fit? “We auditioned over a dozen candidates from a pool of 100. When Sam started playing with us,his attention to detail was remarkable,” Erna recalls. “At one point, I exchanged a look with Robbie, and we both thought, ‘Wow!’ Sam truly did his homework.”
Finding Comfort in Change
“I can’t say without a doubt if I feel reinvigorated yet, but it’s definitely pleasant. Sam plays at an impressive level and brings a vibrant stage presence that enhances our performances. Unlike Tony, who was more reserved, Sam brings a lively energy without being over-the-top,” Erna notes.
The Meaning of Live at Mohegan Sun
“Releasing a live album has always been a dream of mine. Growing up, I was inspired by iconic live albums from the ’70s, like Rush’s Exit Stage Left and Aerosmith’s Live Bootleg. It was a bucket list item to create a powerful double live album that captured the essence of our performance and audience interaction,” he explains.
“I believe we achieved that, and it was particularly special to document the last performance of the original four members together. It was an emotional experiance, and I think fans will feel that connection,” he adds.
Looking Ahead: New Music on the Horizon
As for the future, Erna reveals, “We’re just beginning to brainstorm ideas for our next album. It’s still early, but I anticipate that by early 2027, we’ll start teasing new music.”
“I’m optimistic about what’s next for Godsmack. I’m eager to see how our new sound resonates with fans. I sense that something powerful is on the horizon,” he concludes. “Once we solidify our new lineup and dive into rehearsals, I’ll have a clearer picture of our direction. Performing live will reveal the true essence of this new chapter.”
