The Transformative Power of Jimi Hendrix: Todd Rundgren’s Insights on *Axis: Bold as Love*
Jimi Hendrix fundamentally altered the landscape of rock guitar with his debut album, *Are You Experienced*, yet Todd Rundgren asserts that it was his sophomore effort, *Axis: Bold as Love*, that truly showcased the artist’s evolution into a musical icon.
The Impact of Hendrix’s arrival in Britain
The arrival of Hendrix in Britain marked a pivotal moment in rock history. Established guitar legends like Eric Clapton, who was already revered as a virtuoso, suddenly found themselves in competition with a new force. Jeff Beck even considered stepping away from the guitar altogether, overwhelmed by Hendrix’s innovative style.

Released in 1967, *Are you Experienced* quickly garnered acclaim, but Rundgren believes the transition to *Axis: Bold as Love*, which followed just seven months later, was nothing short of remarkable.

Rundgren’s Perspective on hendrix’s Evolution
Reflecting on his initial impressions of Hendrix, Rundgren shared in a video on Hendrix’s official YouTube channel, “At first, I was uncertain about him. Clapton, Beck, and peter Green all played Gibsons, which had a distinct sound influenced by the blues greats. I aspired to emulate them.”
He continued, “Hendrix, however, wielded a Fender Stratocaster, producing a sound that was markedly different. His style was less about precision and more about a wild, untamed energy. Initially, he leaned on blues and R&B, but he hadn’t yet fully matured as an artist.”
A New Era of Songwriting
For Rundgren, who reminisced about nearly jamming with Hendrix in Greenwich Village, *Axis: Bold as Love* represented a significant turning point. Hendrix had not onyl discovered a unique musical identity but had also expanded his creative horizons as a songwriter.
“This album was a whole new experience,” Rundgren remarked about *Axis: Bold as Love*. “It wasn’t just about the guitar work; Jimi had evolved as a songwriter, crafting a vivid universe filled with imagery like dragonflies and castles. The songs felt like a soundtrack to an imaginative journey.”
Hendrix’s Lasting Influence
Rundgren noted that Hendrix’s songwriting maturity was evident, as tracks like “Little Wing” became widely covered by numerous artists. “This was the first true Jimi Hendrix album for me. It remains timeless, showcasing what can be achieved with a guitar and a lyrical style that was rare among black artists of that era. His creativity was astounding, especially for someone who had risen through the ranks as an R&B guitarist.”
Hendrix’s rapid evolution was striking. While *Are You Experienced?* introduced one of rock’s most thrilling new talents, *Axis: Bold as Love* unveiled an artist who had begun to transcend the blues influences that shaped his early career alongside legends like the Isley Brothers and Little richard.
Rundgren emphasized that Hendrix’s meaning extended beyond technical prowess. For him, the guitarist’s most profound breakthrough lay in his ability to transform his influences into an entirely new musical landscape.
