What Is It?

The amp modeling scene is buzzing, and it’s easy to see⁤ why. Digital technology is paving the way for ⁣the future of sound. The era of traditional tube amplifiers is gradually fading.say goodbye to your vintage combos and embrace⁣ a pedal that can conjure⁣ countless guitar tones with just a click or ⁣a tap.

While traditional amps‍ will always have their place, the last decade has witnessed an explosion in the amp modeling market, especially as the dawn of the 2020s. Neural DSP’s Quad Cortex has revolutionized the landscape, while Fender and Line 6 have ⁤also made significant strides.⁤ competing brands like Valeton,⁤ Hotone,‌ IK Multimedia, Headrush, and Mooer have all contributed their‌ unique takes on⁢ the amp modeling⁤ phenomenon.

Now, Blackstar joins the ranks. This renowned British amplifier manufacturer, celebrated for its lightweight St. James series and the Beam ⁢Mini, has decided to introduce its own interpretation of the modeler concept. Enter the ID:X Floor series.

Blackstar is⁣ no stranger to pedalboard solutions, having received rave reviews for its Amped 1 pedalboard amp, followed by⁢ the successful Amped 2 and Amped 3 models.

However, the ID:X Floor series presents a fresh⁤ approach. This ‍lineup focuses on authentic digital guitar amp and effect ⁣emulation, with ⁣three ⁤distinct ID:X Floor pedals designed to deliver a wide array of practical, straightforward ⁤guitar tones ‍at an impressively affordable price.

Affordability is a key highlight here. The ‍ID:X Floor One, priced at just $269, offers three amp responses, three ⁤amp types, six amp voices, and four ⁣effect categories (over 35 in total), including reverb, delay, modulation, and pre-effects.

This makes it an enticing ⁣option, especially for budget-conscious ⁤musicians. With Blackstar’s reputation backing it, the ID:X ⁢floor One is poised to become a beloved choice among‍ guitarists, potentially emerging as ⁤an unsung hero in the market.

Having played and performed with various models, ⁣including the Nano ‌Cortex,⁤ Quad Cortex Mini, and Helix Stadium, I was ⁢eager‌ to explore what the ID:X Floor had to offer. Let’s dive in!

Build Quality

Build ⁢Quality⁣ Rating: ★★★★☆

Having previously reviewed‍ the Blackstar ID:X⁣ combo, I ‍was pleased ⁤to find that ⁣the build quality of the ID:X Floor One is equally extraordinary. The pedal features a robust chassis that feels solid and durable, giving⁤ it a premium feel that exceeds its price point.

The angled design allows the control knobs‍ to be easily accessible above the footswitches, and the sturdy rubber feet prevent any unwanted movement during use. The back panel includes connections for⁢ stereo XLR out, MIDI in, headphone output, input ⁤jack, and USB-C for utilizing Blackstar’s CabRig technology and connecting to the‍ Architect software for advanced control and⁢ patch‍ sharing.

Though, the pedal’s dark gray finish and small font can make it challenging to read the controls from a distance, notably in dimly lit environments. using it on a dark⁣ stage could pose additional difficulties.

There are a few minor concerns. As I will elaborate in the next section, the footswitches felt somewhat flimsy, with⁣ shallow switch tips that don’t inspire confidence during use.

Additionally, the OLED display⁣ is quite small, which can hinder⁣ the user experience.‍ The amount of data displayed can be overwhelming, and a larger⁢ screen would significantly enhance usability.

Usability

Blackstar ID:X Floor One

Usability Rating: ★★★★☆

The ID:X Floor is crafted to provide a straightforward playing‌ experience, enabling you to quickly ‌and effectively ⁢dial in great tones.

Blackstar excels in this area, as the ID:X Floor is designed for a no-frills playing experience that ⁢allows you to ⁢easily and reliably⁤ achieve excellent tones without getting lost in menus or options. And it certainly‍ delivers on that promise.

Out of the box, you can select from six amp voices using the top rotary dial. Thes‍ include Clean Warm, Clean Luminous, Crunch,⁢ Super Crunch, OD1, and OD2. A secondary⁣ select button allows you to choose between Amps 1, Amps 2, and Acoustic/Bass options.

In total, these controls provide access to 18 Blackstar-style amps, ⁣ranging from the St. james 6L6 and⁢ Artisan 30 to the Ampton Plexi and series One 100.

Additionally, there’s a button for selecting tube response types-EL84,EL34,and 6L6-covering a variety of Marshall and Fender-style valve ⁣responses.this feature opens up even more tonal possibilities with just a few simple adjustments, making it ideal for those seeking a⁤ hands-on tone-shaping experience.

However,I found it puzzling that the LED indicators for the selected response and amp are not positioned ⁣next to the corresponding⁢ text, but rather flanked by the buttons themselves. Placing them adjacent to the relevant text⁤ would enhance clarity.

Once your amp setup is ⁢complete, you’ll find a ‌familiar array of real-amp-like control knobs for fine-tuning, including a three-band EQ, Gain, Master, and Volume knobs, along‍ with an⁤ ISF control-Blackstar’s proprietary Infinite Shape Function (more on that ⁣later).

Below these controls, you’ll⁤ find buttons for activating⁣ effects, along with ‍two smaller dials for selecting the ‍effect type and adjusting ‍various parameters.

For those transitioning from traditional amplifiers, the ID:X Floor One feels intuitive, with tangible controls that mimic the experience of using a real amp. Musicians familiar with digital modeling gear will also find it easy to navigate.

However, there are some limitations inherent to the format. the ⁢footswitches are solely for ⁤recalling ‌patches and cannot be used to activate effects. While you could technically set up two patches-one with delay and one without-to work around this, having a dedicated switch for effect activation would have been a valuable addition.

However, this limitation is inherent to the compact design of the ID:X Floor One. If ⁢you prefer more functionality, the larger ID:X Floor Three model includes dedicated effect footswitches, which is an significant consideration when ⁢making your choice.

Regarding the‍ footswitches, I found them to be somewhat lacking in ⁣sturdiness. While‌ I appreciate a gentle touch, these switches felt so ⁤soft that they were⁣ nearly unnoticeable. This is largely due ‌to the small⁢ size of the switch tips; a more considerable design would have been preferable.

Additionally, while the physical‍ controls are straightforward to use, navigating between patches ⁢can be cumbersome due to the minuscule size of the display. The screen is so compact that it can become tedious to‌ read, cramming too much ⁤information into a small space. A larger‍ display would significantly enhance usability.

That ⁢said, the ⁢screen is not the core of the ID:X Floor One’s functionality, and it does not heavily depend on it for sound quality. The primary goal‌ here is to provide speedy,user-pleasant access to excellent guitar ⁢tones. So, does it succeed?

Sound Quality

Sound Quality Rating: ★★★★☆

Blackstar has successfully tailored the floorboard modeler experience ‌to its signature sound.

As a long-time fan of Blackstar amplifiers,‌ I have⁤ consistently been impressed with their offerings over the years. My admiration for the ID:X series is well-documented, and I’ve also enjoyed using St. James‌ combos during various performances. I’m delighted to ‌report that⁤ the essence of those amplifiers is effectively captured in this model.

Blackstar has made commendable efforts to ⁢infuse its unique character‍ into the floorboard modeler experience. The inclusion of the ISF‌ control‌ allows users to transition between ⁣American and British amp tones-offering a tighter, more⁣ focused sound reminiscent of Fenders, and a‍ “woodier, warmer” crunch‍ akin to Marshalls. The ‍ISF feature is not merely a gimmick; it serves as a valuable tool for fine-tuning tones.

Additionally, Blackstar has introduced an exclusive ‘In the Room’ voice that aims to ⁢replicate the ambiance ⁤of playing through a traditional amplifier in a physical space. This feature is genuinely effective, providing a rich low-end response and a well-balanced high-end that avoids the harsh digital spikes⁤ often found in emulations. ⁣The depth of sound is convincingly authentic.

The clean tones are outstanding,⁤ and while the crunch settings may lack harmonic complexity,‌ they deliver powerful sound.

While these tones may not be the best in the modeling market, especially when compared‌ to the pricier Neural DSP options, there is still much to appreciate. The clean tones are extraordinary, and the crunch settings, while not overly rich in harmonic detail, can certainly deliver a ⁣punch. ⁤There is a ‌distinct variety among them as well.

In terms of effects, there are⁤ 35 options available, all of which I found enjoyable.‌ The reverbs,in particular, stood out with their excellent spring and ambient effects, while the modulation options, especially tremolo and chorus, were impressive. Although adjusting these effects can be ‍challenging due to the small screen and dials, this is an unavoidable aspect of the pedal’s compact design.

Enhancing the overall experience is Blackstar’s CabRig technology,⁣ which provides advanced DSP speaker emulation. According to‍ Blackstar, this technology surpasses standard Impulse Response methods by ⁢eliminating latency and potential‌ phase issues.

the ID:X Floor One offers a range of ⁤highly usable tones with impressive control options, making it a viable choice for live performances.

Final Thoughts

Blackstar ID:X Floor One

This is an excellent choice for those entering the amp modeling realm.

This model represents a strong and practical entry⁣ into the digital modeling floorboard market from Blackstar. It was clear ‌from the outset that it wouldn’t rival the likes of Neural DSP or‍ line 6. Rather, Blackstar has wisely targeted⁤ the budget segment with a product that exceeds expectations for its price range.

This strategy has‌ proven successful. ⁤In my opinion, the ID:X Floor One is a fantastic option for newcomers to the amp modeling world or ⁤for those seeking an affordable⁤ modeler to complement their existing setup. It is more than capable for smaller gigs and serves ⁤as an excellent alternative for those wanting a variety of tones at an attractive price point.

Blackstar’s future in amp modeling⁤ looks promising, and I am eager to see how the company continues to innovate in this ⁤space. They have effectively carved out a niche with this product.

Guitar World Verdict: This is a commendable first step into⁣ the digital modeler floorboard market ‍for‌ Blackstar, ⁣which clearly has ‍a bright future ahead. ⁤It offers a wealth of ⁣quality tones, user-friendly functionality, and is well-suited for those new to the modeler ‍experience.
