Revolutionizing Delay: Strymon EC-1 Brings Iconic Tape Echo to your Pedalboard
Strymon has once again made waves in the compact effects pedal arena with the introduction of the EC-1, a tape echo delay pedal that draws inspiration from a legendary vintage model.
In recent product launches, Strymon has shifted its focus from the larger, feature-rich pedals that initially defined its brand, opting rather for designs that are more compatible with modern pedalboards.
This new direction has been exemplified by previous releases such as the UltraViolet Vintage Vibe, Brig dBucket Delay, and Cloudburst Ambient Reverb. The EC-1 is the latest embodiment of this compact beliefs.
A Nod to the Classics
The standout feature of the EC-1, aside from being the smallest tape echo pedal Strymon has produced, is its design inspiration from the revered Echoplex EP-2.
Initially, Strymon intended to base the EC-1 solely on the dTape algorithm from its El Capistan pedal. however, the acquisition of a pristine Echoplex EP-2, modified by the legendary gear technician Cesar diaz, shifted their approach.
The EP-2 is one of the most coveted Echoplex models, often fetching prices over $1,000 in the vintage market. it has a rich history, having been utilized by guitar icons like Jimmy Page and andy Summers, preceding the EP-3, which was favored by Eddie Van Halen and Brian May.
The Magic of Modifications
Cesar Diaz, known for his work with artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, enhanced the tube preamp of the EP-2, allowing it to achieve a warmer tone and a more nuanced frequency response. This modification resulted in a unique character that evokes a sense of nostalgia.
“When we received the unit, it was in immaculate condition and sounded incredible. We later discovered it had been extensively modified by the renowned guitar tech Cesar Diaz,” shared Strymon CEO Gregg Stock. “His modifications combined the best features of both tube and solid-state Echoplexes, prompting us to invest time in replicating its behavior.”
Features and Functionality
With the modified EP-2 as a reference, the Strymon team focused on capturing its tape delay essence in the EC-1. The pedal features controls for Time, Mix, Repeats, and Mechanics, along with a Tape Age parameter to simulate various tape conditions.
It offers versatile connectivity options, including mono-to-mono, mono-to-stereo, and stereo-to-stereo configurations via a rear switch. Additionally, the EC-1 supports full MIDI integration for preset management and includes a MIDI/Expression jack for enhanced parameter control.
Strymon confidently claims, “The EC-1 is the most inspiring tape echo ever packed into a compact design, overflowing with the enchanting magic that only tape-based nuances and imperfections can provide.”
The EC-1 is now available for purchase at a price of $279.
