Welcome to the latest feature from the Drummer’s review Live Room, where we explore the remarkable Norseman snare Drum crafted by Tarian Drums.
This review was filmed in November 2024 (details on recording and equipment can be found below).
Tarian Drums describes the Norseman as a tribute to Viking heritage. Available in sizes 14×7 or 13×7, this snare drum features a robust 17-ply shell made from alternating layers of oak and Scandinavian birch. The oak, historically favored by Viking shipbuilders, delivers a focused sound with remarkable projection, while the birch contributes warmth to the overall tone.
The outer veneer showcases a striking grain pattern highlighted in blue, reminiscent of customary Viking tattoos. Inside, the oak veneer is equally stunning, featuring custom wooden washers inspired by the iconic twin battle axes of the Vikings.
Meticulously handcrafted, the 17-ply shell is made entirely from premium Scandinavian birch and Welsh oak, ensuring durability through cross-lamination. The carefully selected inner and outer veneers enhance the drum’s aesthetic, finished with a natural wax for a subtle sheen.
With premium black hardware, the Norseman is available in both 14×7 and 13×7 sizes, equipped with double-ended tube lugs and high-quality die-cast chrome rims.
the Norseman snare drum is not just a visual masterpiece; it also delivers powerful sound capable of cutting through even the most demanding musical genres.

“The microphone setup was designed to ensure that the overheads and room mics were aligned to the center of the snare drum, maintaining phase coherence. The AEA R88 MK2 mics, being stereo, posed no phase issues, while the front center room mic and center overhead were aligned for a consistent stereo image. Phase adjustments were made on the kick and snare mics as necessary. Hi-pass filters were applied only to the hi-hat, ride, and overhead mics. The Electrovoice PL80 mics on the snare provide a flat representation of the drum sound. Every effort was made to ensure that the audio example in the video accurately reflects the drum’s sound in the live room, which has been acoustically treated for neutrality. Using 16 identical mic preamps also aids in maintaining consistent tone and phase. The goal was to capture a true representation of the drums’ sound and demonstrate potential sound modifications.”
