Marcin Patrzalek: The Fingerstyle Revolution and His Pick-Free Philosophy
Polish acoustic guitar innovator Marcin Patrzalek boldly claims that guitar picks are “the most constraining tool imaginable,” emphasizing that using one would undermine his musical roots.
A true maestro of fingerstyle and percussive techniques, Marcin first captured the spotlight by winning Poland’s Got Talent in 2015, later making waves in the semi-finals of the American version of the show in 2019. His journey has been marked by a series of viral YouTube performances, where he reinterprets symphonies and popular rock and pop songs through his unique artistic lens.
Upon the release of his debut album, Dragon in Harmony, last year, Guitar Player even suggested he might be the most significant progress in acoustic guitar since the legendary Andrés Segovia. marcin is undoubtedly reshaping the instrument’s image for a new generation of musicians and fans alike.
The Pick-Free Approach
One thing you won’t see from this percussive artist is striking the strings of his signature Ibanez MRC10 with a plastic pick.
“Even when I play electric guitar, I refuse to use a pick,” he passionately declares in a recent video with D’Addario. “Why would I need one? I have five right here on my hand.”
While the influence of contemporary electric guitarists like tim Henson can be heard in tracks such as “Classical Dragon,” wich features a solo from Henson himself, Marcin’s roots are deeply embedded in classical guitar and flamenco traditions. This background explains why he refers to himself as “an adversary of the pick.”
“No self-respecting classical guitarist would ever use a pick,” he insists. “I can’t even fathom what that would look like. And in flamenco, how could you perform a rasgueado-a technique that involves multiple fingers-using a pick? The pick is essentially the nails, my friend.”
Crafting a Unique Style
in an interview with Total guitar last year,Marcin described his eclectic playing style as a blend of classical training and flamenco-inspired right-hand techniques. The rhythmic flair of guitarists like Tommy Emmanuel and Jon Gomm also plays a significant role in shaping his sound.
“My left hand operates in a conventional manner; it needs to tap and play like any guitarist,” he explains in the new video. ”But I am a staunch opponent of the pick. I never use one.”
For Marcin, utilizing a pick would mean sacrificing four fingers, contradicting his philosophy of transcending limitations while honoring tradition.
“The most uninspired comment you can make to an artist is, ‘You shouldn’t be doing that.’ Do you even hear yourself?” he remarks. “Since my first video-‘Toxicity’ by System of a Down-I’ve encountered people with rigid ideas about guitar playing, unable to appreciate a fresh approach.”
“but that tells me I’m reaching new audiences, introducing people to a style they’ve never encountered before. Its a beautiful thing,” he adds. “Now I’m performing percussive guitar at major events like Fuji Rock and the montreal Jazz Festival-platforms that typically don’t showcase this style.”
embracing Change in the Guitar World
“Even though there’s a clash between traditionalists and modernists, I see it as a positive development. It signifies that this is the next big wave in music,” he asserts.
In a similar vein, fellow acoustic trailblazer Tommy Emmanuel has shared stories of his experiences, including a memorable night when he outperformed Les Paul at his request, ensuring that the legendary guitarist had the last laugh.
