Introducing the Boss VG-800: A new Era in Guitar Modeling
NAMM 2025 has unveiled the boss VG-800 V-Guitar processor, marking one of the brand’s most aspiring ventures into guitar modeling technology. The term ‘V-Guitar’ may evoke nostalgia, as it was first introduced by Roland, Boss’s parent company, back in 1995.
Revolutionizing Guitar Sounds
The VG-800 represents a significant evolution in this technology, specifically designed to work seamlessly with Boss’s Serial GK divided pickup. While it complements the existing Boss GM-800, which focuses on customary synth sounds, the VG-800 is primarily a stringed instrument emulator. When combined, these devices can cover an extensive range of instrumental sounds, transforming your guitar into virtually any instrument you desire.
Limitless Instrument Emulations
With the right presets and custom patch configurations, the VG-800 can replicate a wide array of electric guitar models, as well as acoustic guitars, basses, sitars, banjos, and even synthesizer tones. This versatility opens up a world of creative possibilities for musicians.
According to boss’s press release, the VG-800 offers “deep customization tools that allow for adjustments in string behavior, instrument type, pickup placement, resonance, and much more.” Musicians can tweak each string’s pitch and panning, enabling alternate tunings and expansive soundscapes.
Simultaneous Instrument Play
One of the standout features of the VG-800 is its ability to trigger different ‘instruments’ from individual strings. This allows for the simultaneous play of various sounds, and its pitch capabilities enable swift B-Bender-style tunings.Additionally, it incorporates the same high-quality signal processing found in Boss’s renowned multi-effects units, applicable to both modeled sounds and the standard guitar input.
Recording Powerhouse
In line with modern standards, the VG-800 functions as a USB and MIDI interface, positioning itself as a “recording powerhouse.” Musicians can record two modeled instruments alongside the direct guitar signal, each on separate tracks in their DAW. Moreover, the unit allows for “re-guitaring” of dry signals, transforming them into alternative string instruments or guitars with adjusted pitches and tunings.
Compact and Affordable
designed with portability in mind, the VG-800 fits comfortably on a pedalboard, roughly the size of three of Boss’s classic compact pedals. Priced at $649, this innovative technology, once reserved for avant-garde artists like Matt Bellamy, is now accessible to the everyday guitarist.
