The Enchanting World of 12-String guitars: A Deep Dive into Restringing, Tuning, and Strumming
The distinctive, resonant tones of both acoustic and electric 12-string guitars have significantly shaped the landscape of popular music, spanning genres from blues and rock to pop and folk.
these guitars are characterized by their six pairs of strings, referred to as courses, wich contribute to their signature vibrant and full-bodied sound.Each pair of strings is spaced closely together, allowing for a unique articulation that mimics the sound of a single string.
Typically,the two highest courses are tuned in unison,while the four lower courses are tuned in octaves,mirroring the standard tuning of a six-string guitar. The slight pitch variations between the unison strings,combined wiht the octave pairs,create a natural chorus effect that is both captivating and rich.
Due to the additional strings, 12-string guitars often feature wider and thicker necks. The increased number of tuning machines and the size of the headstock can lead to a neck-heavy feel.Beyond their physical attributes, these guitars have been a go-to choice in recordings, frequently enough serving as a secret ingredient to enhance guitar arrangements.
Throughout the decades, 12-string guitars have made their mark across nearly every musical genre. Iconic artists such as George Harrison (The Beatles – Ticket To Ride), Roger McGuinn (The Byrds – Mr. Tambourine Man), Pete Townshend (The Who – Substitute), and many others have showcased their unique sound. As an example, using a Cadd9 chord rather of the standard open C shape allows your third finger to remain in place for easier transitions. Once you’re comfortable with chord changes and strumming, take advantage of the unique sound of paired strings by arpeggiating the chord progression from the previous example. Aim for consistency in tone by using all downstrokes or alternating picking. Downstrokes will highlight the octave strings, while alternate picking adds contrast and texture.

Example 3: Focusing on the Third String and it’s Octave
This example emphasizes the distinctive feature of the 12-string guitar-the third string and its octave. It incorporates a droning G string along with modified CAGED shape arpeggios in E minor. This technique shines particularly on an electric 12-string, especially with light overdrive and reverb, reminiscent of artists like Alex Lifeson from Rush or Chris DeGarmo from Queensryche. The combination of octave strings and drones creates a natural modulation effect that sounds enchanting when layered in recordings.

Example 4: Folk Rock-Inspired Cross Picking
This technique draws inspiration from the iconic 12-string work of Roger McGuinn with The Byrds, as well as the lead lines and chords utilized by Jimmy Page and john Butler. It combines droning fourth and third strings with descending melodic lines and partial chords. Pay close attention to articulating the fretted notes clearly to achieve the desired sound.

12-string guitars are often employed as textural instruments, and using a capo can significantly enhance the depth of your recordings while inspiring fresh interpretations of familiar chord progressions.
Taking inspiration from The Eagles, this example places a capo at the 7th fret and reconfigures the chords from the previous example (Em, C, D, and A) into CAGED shapes for Am, F, G, and D.
Due to the wider necks of 12-string guitars, many manufacturers produce capos specifically designed for them. While my electric 12-string accommodates a standard 6-string capo, my acoustic model is too wide for that!

For this concluding study piece, I’ve blended my favorite elements from bands like The Byrds, Led Zeppelin, and The Smiths.
the piece opens with a light, melodic line in G major (refer to Example 4), transitions into a pre-chorus that combines open position chords and arpeggios (see Examples 1 and 2), and culminates in a powerful sequence of droning arpeggios in E minor (as seen in Examples 3 and 5).
