Exploring Open G Tuning: Insights from Charlie Starr
Welcome to my latest column for Guitar World! In this series, I’ll be diving into various aspects of guitar playing, including rhythm techniques, solo improvisation, slide guitar, open tunings, and songwriting. These elements have significantly influenced the music I’ve created with my band, Blackberry Smoke.
Getting Started with Open G tuning
let’s kick things off by discussing open G tuning, a technique I utilized while composing the Blackberry Smoke track Ain’t Much Left of Me from our 2012 album, The Whippoorwill.
My journey with songwriting began in 2001, and the first song I crafted was in open G tuning, titled Sanctified Woman. The song opens with a rhythmic pattern similar to Figure 1.
To create this sound, I play a G5 chord by fretting the 6th, 4th, and 3rd strings, using my thumb to reach the 5th fret for the low G note. This transitions into Gsus4 and then G, utilizing the open 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings, followed by D5 and C5 chords played by barring across these strings.
The Power of Open G Tuning
This approach served as an excellent foundation for our band, which at the time consisted of just three members-myself, Brit, and Richard Turner. When I played that initial riff, one of them exclaimed, “that sounds great! What is that?”
Open G tuning is achieved by tuning the 6th, 5th, and 1st strings down a whole step while keeping the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings in standard tuning. This results in the notes D, G, D, G, B, D from low to high. Strumming these open strings produces a rich and resonant G major chord.
I first encountered open G tuning at the age of 12 while exploring a transcription of the Rolling Stones’ classic Honky tonk Women. As many of you may know, Keith Richards has penned numerous iconic songs using this tuning.
slide Guitar and Open G Tuning
Open G tuning is also fantastic for slide guitar, as illustrated in Figure 2. I start by sliding into a D chord, then move down to C, Bb, A, and G, finishing with a standard G5 voicing played on the top four strings. The figure continues with additional open G-style licks executed with the slide.
My fascination with the alternate chord shapes that this tuning allows is evident in Figure 3. By fretting the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings at the 2nd, 3rd, and 1st frets respectively, while combining them with the open 5th and 1st strings, you can create a beautiful C9/G voicing that isn’t achievable in standard tuning.
As shown in Figure 4, you can also discover unique fingerings for dominant 7th chords such as D7, C7, F7, and G7.
Finding Your Unique Voice
As I mentioned earlier, Ain’t Much Left of Me is performed in open G tuning. My goal was not to replicate the styles of Keith Richards or Rich Robinson from the Black Crowes; instead, I aimed to carve out my own guitar identity, much like the Delta blues legends Son house and Charlie Patton did.
Figure 5 showcases the main riff of the song. The first bar features an Fsus2/G transitioning to C/G and then G, repeated in the second bar and concluded with descending slides on the 5th and 2nd strings.
Bars 1 and 2 of Figure 6 illustrate the fundamental groove between G5 and F5, with the primary lick revisited in bars 3 and 4.
I also composed another section, depicted in Figure 7, which incorporates arpeggiated chords and sliding shapes combined with single-note melodies, forming the basis for the song’s introduction.
