Many rock enthusiasts recognize Joe Satriani as the guitarist who was approached by David Lee Roth and Alex van Halen for a tribute tour following Eddie Van Halen’s passing. Though, satriani recently revealed that Roth had initially sought him out much earlier - during a time when Eddie was still actively performing and recording.
In an interview with Thinking About Guitar,Satriani recounted a pivotal phone call from Roth in the mid-1990s. “David wanted to assemble a band to perform Van Halen songs,” he shared. “He was enthusiastic, claiming we were the only ones capable of doing it justice, and he had all these aspiring ideas.”
While the exact date of this conversation remains uncertain, it coincided with Roth’s brief reunion with Van Halen in 1996, before the band transitioned to Gary Cherone, who fronted them for the release of Van Halen III in 1998.
Regardless of the timing, satriani expressed skepticism about the proposal. “I told him,’But Dave,Ed is still alive! He’s creating incredible music and touring. What guitarist would want to mimic him while he’s still active? It just doesn’t make sense,’” he recalled.
For Satriani,the thought of stepping into Eddie Van Halen’s shoes while he was still innovating was unfathomable. As a long-time admirer of Eddie’s groundbreaking guitar work, he had no desire to replicate it while its originator was still pushing the boundaries of the instrument.

Years later, the idea of a tribute band resurfaced under different circumstances. Following Eddie Van Halen’s passing on October 6, 2020, both Roth and Alex Van Halen reached out to satriani about participating in a tribute project to honor the legendary guitarist. Reports indicated that former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted was also contacted, but the project ultimately stalled, with Alex later attributing the delay to Roth.
“When they called me after Ed’s death, it made a bit more sense,” Satriani reflected. ”Even then, I tried to explain that I wasn’t the right person for the job.”
Rather of taking on the role himself, Satriani recommended two guitarists he believed would be more fitting for the tribute: his former student Steve Vai and Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme. Ultimately, the project never came to fruition.
Though,Satriani did find himself performing Van Halen songs on stage in a different context. In 2024, he joined Sammy Hagar’s Best of All Worlds tour, showcasing music from Hagar’s era with the band as well as the broader Van Halen catalog. While Hagar remarked that Satriani might not be the ideal choice, he acknowledged that Satriani brought his unique flair to the music.
