Honoring a Legend: Dave Friedman too Launch José Arredondo Tribute Amplifier at NAMM 2025
NAMM 2025: Renowned amp designer Dave Friedman is preparing to unveil a groundbreaking amplifier that pays homage to the late José Arredondo, a titan in the world of guitar amplification.
The Legacy of josé Arredondo
José Arredondo is celebrated as one of the most influential guitar amp builders in music history, particularly known for his custom modifications of marshall amplifiers. His work has been embraced by legendary guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen,Steve Vai,and James Hetfield, solidifying his status in the industry.
In the twilight of his career, Arredondo’s reputation soared, especially after Eddie Van Halen acknowledged him in the 1980s, although the exact impact of his modifications on Van Halen’s iconic sound remains a topic of discussion.
A Pioneer Among Amp Wizards
Arredondo is often regarded as one of the original “amp wizards,” a term that refers to the first generation of amp modders. According to Friedman, Arredondo crafted a unique signature amplifier for Van Halen that has mysteriously vanished over time.
As highlighted in a 2010 article by Guitar World, Arredondo is both a celebrated and enigmatic figure in the realm of amp building. Despite the legendary status of his modifications, he left no documentation of his techniques, resulting in many of his secrets being lost to time.
Reviving the Spirit of Arredondo
However, not all is lost. Friedman, who had a personal connection with Arredondo and possesses extensive knowledge of his work, is set to create an amplifier that embodies Arredondo’s innovative spirit, with the full support of his family.
In a recent interview with Guitar World, Friedman expressed his excitement: “We’re working on something significant for enthusiasts of this craft. I’ve always thought it would be fantastic to develop an amp that incorporates all of Arredondo’s signature features.”
“Having worked on countless Arredondo amps, I wanted to collaborate with his family to ensure that this tribute is authentic and respectful. It’s significant to me that we honor his legacy properly.”
The Upcoming Tribute Amplifier
Friedman revealed plans for a 100-watt amplifier that will carry Arredondo’s name, emphasizing the importance of giving back to Arredondo’s family and preserving his legacy. “This amplifier will encapsulate everything that made José’s work special,” he stated.
In a recent episode of the Tone-Talk podcast, Friedman elaborated on the project alongside Arredondo’s daughter, Marisol. “José was a pioneer of high-gain sound, and his influence permeated the music scene from the late 1970s through the 1980s,” Friedman reflected. “With Marisol’s blessing, we are excited to produce a tribute amplifier under the Friedman brand, complete with his signature.”
What to Expect from the New Amplifier
Friedman is committed to ensuring that each amplifier meets the high standards associated with Arredondo’s name. “This amp will feature all the gain styles he was known for, and I believe it will be an remarkable tribute to his artistry,” he added.
“While there may be more projects in the future, this particular amplifier will encompass all the modifications he ever created. José was an unusual individual, and I want to honor his family through this endeavor.”
The highly anticipated amplifier is scheduled to be revealed at NAMM 2025 later this month. For more updates, stay tuned to Friedman’s official channels.
