Vince Gill’s Journey to Acquiring a Cherished 1959 Les Paul ‘Burst
Throughout his illustrious career, Vince Gill has worn many hats: from a session musician and a member of Pure Prairie League to a celebrated solo artist and, more recently, a vital part of the Eagles. His musical journey has been accompanied by a diverse array of Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters, alongside a collection of exquisite Gibson and Martin acoustic guitars.
A personal connection to a Vintage Classic
Despite his extensive collection, Gill had never felt compelled to own a vintage Les Paul ‘Burst, primarily due to his limited use of the model. However, a poignant personal event changed that outlook dramatically.
In a heartfelt conversation with Guitar Aficionado in 2017, Gill recounted, “I purchased a 1959 Les Paul from my brother-in-law from my first marriage to contry singer Janis Oliver. He had owned this stunning sunburst guitar as 1959 and had played it throughout his life.”
“Sadly, he fell ill a couple of years back and reached out to me, saying, ‘There’s not much they can do for me. I’m probably not going to make it. You’ve always been my favorite guitarist. Would you consider buying my Les Paul?’”
Gill reflected on his initial hesitation, stating, “I didn’t have a sunburst Les Paul in my collection, and I had previously thought it was too extravagant since I don’t often play a Les Paul. But when this prospect arose, I knew it was meant to be. My friend had cherished it for 40 years, and now it can continue to create music.”
A Guitar collection with Heart
The ‘Burst now holds a special place in Gill’s extensive collection, which is primarily housed in his home studio. With a hint of humor, he shared with Guitar Player in 2022, ”I probably have a couple of hundred guitars, but I don’t own a yacht or multiple properties. I wouldn’t say it’s out of hand, but it’s definitely on the edge.”
