Introduction
In our previous review, we explored Furch’s groundbreaking Little Jane travel guitar, which featured a detachable neck that conveniently fit within the body of the instrument.
This innovative design included a compact gig bag, allowing musicians to easily store the guitar in an airplane’s overhead compartment, sidestepping the unpredictable policies some airlines enforce regarding musical instruments.
What truly set the Little Jane apart was its ability to remain in tune after reassembly. We tested this feature, and indeed, once the neck was reattached, only a minor adjustment was needed to bring it back to pitch, making it performance-ready.
Playing the guitar was a delightful experience, wiht none of the tonal compromises often found in other travel guitars. We believed it would be a fantastic instrument even without the detachable neck feature. This brings us to the Pioneer-ER,which offers a similar experience.
However, Furch has not rested on its past achievements; the Pioneer-ER includes a built-in mechanism designed to counteract the effects of humidity and temperature fluctuations on the guitar.
According to Furch, this system features a dual-action truss rod housed in a robust carbon structure, complemented by a solid-wood expansion element that automatically adjusts the neck angle to maintain consistent string action over time.This innovation minimizes the need for expensive neck resets and alleviates maintenance worries.
As illustrated in the diagram above, the Furch CNR system Active consists of a wooden block that expands or contracts based on the surrounding humidity, automatically adjusting the neck as needed.
A specialized tool for setting your desired action height, along with a measuring gauge, is included with the guitar. If this sounds overwhelming, rest assured that it appears to be a straightforward set-it-and-forget-it process.
However, to thoroughly evaluate this system, we took it for a test run. While we couldn’t replicate humidity changes to see if the automatic feature of the CNR System Active functioned as intended, we could certainly use the tool to adjust the string height for improved playability.
Upon receiving the Pioneer, we found the action to be perfectly set, indicating it had endured the journey from Furch’s Czech workshops to the UK without issue. However, you might prefer a different action height to match your playing style, so we utilized the special tool for adjustments.
If this adjustment process seems familiar, it resembles Fender’s neck tilt system from the 1970s.
Typically, adjusting action involves a combination of truss rod tweaks and either sanding down or replacing the guitar’s saddle, depending on whether you wont to raise or lower the action. With this system, you simply insert the tool through the strings-no need to loosen them first-and connect it to the adjustment socket on the guitar’s neck block.
Initially,we struggled a bit with inserting the tool,but practice makes perfect,and soon we achieved the desired action height. Once connected, a simple turn of the handle adjusts the action as needed-easy as pie.
If you think this sounds familiar, it indeed shares similarities with Fender’s neck tilt system from the 1970s, which is also utilized in the modern Acoustasonic guitars.
If you reside in the UK, you likely won’t need to use the tool frequently. However, if you’re planning a busking journey from Florida to Alaska, it might be wise to familiarize yourself with it.
Another noteworthy feature is Furch’s Booster Soundport, which consists of five slots cut into the upper bout of the guitar. While other manufacturers have incorporated similar ports as holes, Furch’s design resembles a small grille.
Furch states: “This innovative feature decreases internal air pressure within the guitar’s body, allowing the top to vibrate more freely and produce a richer, fuller sound with the same strumming effort.” This seems quite logical.
So, what does the Pioneer-ER offer? First, it features travel-pleasant dimensions housed in a durable and potentially roadworthy gig bag. The guitar measures 935mm (about 36 inches) in total length, with a body width of 325mm (12.7 inches) at its widest point and a length of 430mm (16.9 inches)-similar to a Gibson Les Paul.
Our review model boasts an Engelmann spruce top with Indian rosewood back and sides-hence the “ER” designation-but if this combination doesn’t appeal, the Pioneer is available with various wood options. It’s critically important to note that Furch emphasizes these are all solid woods, unlike many other compact acoustics available today.
The neck of the Pioneer is crafted from African mahogany, featuring an ebony fingerboard with a relatively flat 400mm (15.7-inch) radius and tiny position markers. The body is elegantly bound in black, and the top is adorned with a nearly invisible clear scratchplate and a subtle rosette.
As is customary with Furch instruments, the overall aesthetic is visually appealing, and the open-pore satin finish on both the body and neck enhances the playing experience. The craftsmanship is exceptional throughout, so the next step is to explore the sound this travel guitar produces.

Playability and Sound
Equipped with the CNR System Active, the Pioneer does experience a slight neck dive when played while seated. however, this is easily manageable and quickly forgotten after a brief adjustment period.
The open-pore finish provides a natural, smooth feel that enhances playability, notably on the neck where your fretting hand can glide effortlessly without the drag frequently enough associated with glossy finishes.
