Brian May’s Red Special is not just any electric guitar; it is a cornerstone of rock history. Constructed by a young May alongside his father, this guitar has been pivotal in creating numerous Queen classics.its influence has led too the establishment of Brian May Guitars, a brand dedicated to producing accessible replicas of this iconic instrument.
A Fresh Take on a Classic
While various interpretations of the Red Special have emerged over the years, Steve vai’s version stands out. this guitar has been tailored specifically for the virtuoso, incorporating modifications that align it more closely with his Ibanez signature models.
Guyton Guitars, the builders behind this project, shared their excitement on social media, stating, “We are thrilled to finally reveal this long-term project, now in the capable hands of the legendary Steve Vai!”
Custom Features and Specifications
Steve Vai had specific requests regarding the materials, electronics, and scale length, resulting in subtle yet notable differences from the original Red Special. The new scale length measures 25.5 inches,bringing it closer to the feel of his Ibanez Jem and Pia guitars,compared to the original’s 24-inch scale.
To accommodate this longer scale, the body has been slightly enlarged. It features custom Yonderbosk Vai-Sonic pickups, designed to fit the Red Special’s schematic, along with versatile switching options, including Series/parallel configurations and a built-in KAT treble booster.
A Visual Masterpiece
Visually, this guitar is nothing short of breathtaking. The 5A quilted maple top, complete with a matching headstock, is a sight to behold.The birdseye maple fingerboard adds to its allure, while the intricate Yin Yang inlays, crafted from mother of pearl and Tahitian black pearl, are accented with 9ct gold dots-truly a work of art.

We can’t overlook the exquisite pickguard, designed by Greg Goodwillie of Goodwillie Guns and Guitars. It features Vai’s logo amidst a swirl of intricate designs, elevating the pickguard to a level of artistic expression rarely seen in guitar design.
Goodwillie expressed his pride in the project on Instagram, noting, “Working for a guitar legend like Steve vai is a rare possibility. The details in the scroll work reveal new elements the more you look at it, making it a truly enjoyable project.”
Excitement Surrounding the Unveiling
According to Guyton Guitars, ”Steve is absolutely thrilled with his new instrument.” Rumors suggest that an unboxing video featuring vai and his technician Doug is on the horizon, and fans are eagerly awaiting its release.
As of now, the unboxing video has yet to be published, but anticipation is high for both the video and the possibility of seeing vai perform with this stunning guitar soon.
Future Collaborations on the Horizon
This may not be the last high-end Red Special we see. Gibson announced an official partnership with Brian May last year, and during a conversation in June 2024, May hinted at the potential for US-made Murphy Lab replicas of the Red Special.
