With an notable catalog of over a dozen albums and EPs from her time with the Pixies, the Breeders, and the Amps, including hits like Gigantic, Deal, now 64, could easily adopt a cynical outlook. However, her genuine curiosity and warm spirit keep her grounded. after each performance with the Breeders, she eagerly stayed to enjoy Rodrigo’s set.
“When she finally appeared on stage, the crowd erupted,” Deal recalls during a phone interview from her home in Dayton, Ohio, still in awe. “The volume was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced at a concert. And I’ve seen some wild shows back in the ’90s!”
Though she may not be accustomed to such fervent displays of enthusiasm from younger fans, Deal’s charm resonates across generations. The primary reason for her enduring appeal lies in her music, where she effortlessly blends soothing melodies with gritty riffs, frequently enough played on her trusty Seagull acoustic or Fender Stratocaster.

With the Breeders on hiatus, Deal turned her focus to her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You more, released at the close of 2024. This record highlights her vital contributions to the Pixies during their heyday and underscores why Kurt Cobain invited the Breeders on tour in 1993, helping them reach a broader audience and achieve success with Last Splash.
On Nobody Loves You More, Deal explores new musical territories. The title track opens with a simple guitar chord that quickly evolves into a lush orchestral arrangement, complemented by a bossa nova rythm.A minute later, a burst of brass replaces what might have been a guitar solo in a typical Breeders track.
As the orchestral elements fade, the horns transition into playful accents on Coast, featuring contributions from her sister and Breeders guitarist Kelley Deal. Tracks like Disobedience and Wish I Was could seamlessly fit into her 1995 project with the Amps, Pacer.

The gentle track Are You Mine? showcases Deal’s doo-wop influences, echoing the guitar work and laid-back groove of Bob Marley’s Chances Are, which the Breeders covered for their Fate to Fatal EP in 2009.
In songs like Crystal Breath and Big Ben Beat, she ventures into post-rock territory, featuring intricate drum patterns, a driving bassline, and sharp electric guitar accents.

Kim Deal: A Musical Journey Beyond the Guitar
At first glance, Kim deal’s latest album may not seem heavily focused on guitar work. However, the essence of her artistry is woven throughout the tracks, showcasing her unique approach to music.
“I’m not sure I agree with that perspective,” she laughs,reflecting on the underlying guitar elements present in her songs. “While there may not be any intense shredding, the guitar is definitely a foundational aspect.”
Deal acknowledges that while some tracks emphasize string instruments, others, like Summerland, feature a blend of guitars, including a ukulele. “It might sound odd, but if you take a Les Paul, place a capo on the fifth fret, and tape the top two strings, it creates a sound reminiscent of a ukulele,” she explains.

“You’re right about Are You Mine? having a subtle lead melody, which is played in thirds on the G and B strings. The lap steel adds a beautiful touch to that track. A Good Time Pushed features Raymond mcginley from Teenage Fanclub, showcasing a lot of guitar work, while Big Ben Beat prominently features a bass guitar played by Ayse Hassan of Savages.”
“That track was a blast to create,” she continues. “It combines a clean, Hawaiian-inspired guitar part with a descending riff that adds depth.”
Reflecting on her influences,Deal recalls a performance by the Jones Girls in 1979. “I was mesmerized by their harmonies and the lead singer’s long nails. I asked her how she managed to play with them, and she simply said, ‘Honey, I don’t do much but sing.’ It was a glamorous moment for me.”

“I guess you could say that’s my Philly soul influence, but I ended up translating that vibe onto the guitar. Does it sound Hawaiian to you?”
“I have a beautiful nylon-string guitar from Candelas Guitars in East Los Angeles,” she shares,holding it up.”It’s stunning, isn’t it? I also have my Strat, which I used while recording with Steve Albini in Chicago. It’s problably still at his studio.”
“You’re often associated with the Seagull acoustic you used on Cannonball,” the interviewer notes.
“Absolutely. I grew up playing Ovations, which have that shining, shimmery sound. I was drawn to darker tones, like those from Black Sabbath.The Seagull has a flatter, duller sound that I prefer, especially with the L.R.Baggs pickups I loved in the ’90s.”
“It’s a diffrent vibe altogether,” she adds. “I enjoy the darker tones. I remember when engineer Greg Norman was recording me at Electrical Audio,he commented on how dark my sound was and suggested I add some brightness. But I prefer heavier sounds.”

“That’s just my instinctive connection to music,” she concludes. “When someone mentions mariachi, I think, no, this is Philly soul.”
“Do you keep a guitar in every room of yoru house?” the interviewer asks.
“I wish! I try to have a few around.It helps to have them accessible for inspiration,” she replies with a smile.
Kim Deal: Crafting a Unique sound in Her Latest Album
Kim Deal’s latest project stands out as a personal endeavor, distinct from her previous collaborations, particularly with the Breeders. Reflecting on her journey, she notes, “The musicians I worked with before were part of a band dynamic. By 2010, I found myself writing music without a Breeders structure, as I hadn’t communicated with drummer jim Macpherson since the late ’90s.”
After returning home from a tour with the Amps, Deal discovered that Macpherson had removed his drums from her basement. “I thought, ‘What have I done?’” she recalls. Their silence lasted until 2012, when they couldn’t even remember the reason for their estrangement.
During her two-year stay in Los Angeles, Deal began to explore her own musical path. She connected with various drummers, released solo seven-inch records, and continued to write songs. Collaborating with Jack Lawrence from the Greenhorns and the Raconteurs, she recorded at candyland Studios. “I realized I wanted to create something more significant than a seven-inch; it needed to be an album,” she explains.

Creating Music Amidst the Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic,Deal found herself in Key West,where she worked on her music with a selection of instruments. “I had my Candelas guitar, a Les Paul, a Stratocaster, and a Precision bass, along with a ukulele and a charming little kalamazoo amplifier,” she shares. “The amp has a lovely tremolo and reverb,producing a mellow,almost ’beery’ sound that I enjoy.”
She expresses a desire for a Flying V guitar after seeing James Hetfield of Metallica perform with one, admiring its powerful sound.
“I’m not much of a gearhead,” she admits. “Living in Dayton makes it tough to find quality equipment. We have a Guitar Center, but that’s about it.I did manage to pick up a Music Man amp and a Supro amp with a 15-inch speaker while in L.A. I also used a unique P.A. speaker on tracks like crystal Breath and Big Ben Beat, bi-amped with a Marshall.”

collaborating with Family and Remembering a Mentor
deal’s sister, Kelley, contributed to several tracks on the album. “I definitely found myself producing her guitar work,” she laughs. “I thanked Kelley for bringing her bass pedal over to help with Crystal Breath.It’s a Taurus pedal, and we experimented with the attack and sustain to get the right sound.”
Reflecting on her long-standing relationship with the late Steve Albini, she notes, “his influence is evident in the strings on this record. I can hear his signature drum sound, especially on Come Running, where the quiet verses allow the room’s acoustics to shine thru.”
“The strings were a delightful surprise,” she continues. “Albini had 11 players in the room,and everything was beautifully mic’d. The session was relaxed, and he captured it all in one take. Even with the elegance of the strings, it still felt like an Albini production.He looked at us and said, ‘You all like that? So we don’t need to do it again, right?’”
