Teh Unforgettable Farewell: Nuno Bettencourt’s Bold Stand at Black Sabbath’s Final Show
Black Sabbath’s monumental farewell concert, titled “Back to the Beginning,” was a colossal event that required immense effort from all participants. Among them, Nuno bettencourt emerged as the standout performer, contributing his talents to a staggering twelve tracks.
A Legendary Solo Request
However, there was one iconic guitar solo that Bettencourt chose to decline: Jake E. Lee’s renowned solo from The Ultimate Sin, which Lee requested he perform during the event.
Initially, Bettencourt was set to deliver a performance of Bark at the Moon, a classic Ozzy Osbourne hit that Lee was unable to play due to health issues.
Standing Firm for a Friend
When the suggestion arose for Bettencourt to step in for Lee once more, he had a different perspective. “At one point,Tom Morello mentioned,’Jake said,’I no Nuno has a lot on his plate, but coudl he maybe take The Ultimate Sin solo?’” Bettencourt recounted in a recent interview with Guitar World. “We all recognize that, despite Jake’s legendary status, he’s facing challenges as we all do with age and the unpredictability of our physical abilities.”
Bettencourt’s response was resolute: “I told Tom, ‘Get me Jake’s number right now.’ I texted Jake and said, ’You are Jake E. Lee. There’s no way I’m taking that solo. You’re going to play it, and I’ll join you to make it even more spectacular.’ And that’s exactly what we did.”
Creating a Moment for Lee
The intention behind this collaboration was to ensure that Lee had his moment in the spotlight. Bettencourt understood the significance of Lee’s presence for the event’s success, and Morello was simply trying to ease his workload.
Ultimately, Bettencourt felt that Lee deserved the chance to shine. He even took it a step further by walking off the stage during shot in the Dark, allowing Lee to perform solo. “I was supposed to play on Shot in the Dark. I didn’t inform anyone; I just walked off the stage,” he chuckled.
“I wanted Jake to have his moment without another guitarist overshadowing him. And he absolutely nailed it.We all come from bands that typically feature one guitarist. I wanted Jake to have that singular moment to himself, so I stepped away. And he delivered.”
