introducing the EVH 5150III Hypersonic 6L6: A Digital Revolution in Guitar Amplification
EVH has taken a bold step forward in its amplifier lineup with the launch of the 5150III Hypersonic 6L6, a 1×12 combo amp that signifies a new chapter for the brand.
This innovative addition to the Hypersonic series utilizes cutting-edge digital modeling technology to replicate the iconic tube amp tones associated with Eddie Van Halen, all while offering a more accessible and user-kind design.
As the first fully digital amplifier from EVH, this model represents a notable shift for a company renowned for its powerful tube amp heads and massive stacks. earlier this year, EVH hinted at its commitment to the digital amp and modeling market with the introduction of Hypersonic FRFR cabinets.
Currently, the Hypersonic 6L6 stands as EVHS sole digital amplifier, marking a pivotal evolution for a brand deeply rooted in customary amplification methods. As EVH states,”This digital innovation pays tribute to Eddie Van Halen’s spirit of experimentation and creative boundary-pushing.”
The journey to digitize Van Halen’s legendary tone has been a hot topic in the industry. as a notable example, Fender’s Justin Norvell shared insights with Guitar World about the meticulous process involved in creating an EVH-approved amp model for the Tone Master Pro floor unit last year. This dedication to authenticity has now culminated in the growth of a dedicated digital combo, mirroring the approach taken with Fender’s Tone Master amps.
The Hypersonic 6L6 features a classic 1×12″ design, equipped with three channels, dual EQ controls, autonomous channel noise gates, onboard reverb, and an effects loop, all powered by a Celestion speaker.
“This marks the next step in EVH amplification, delivering Eddie’s signature tone through advanced digital technology,” explains Jon Romanowski, VP of Product for EVH Guitars. “The Hypersonic 6L6 1×12 dismantles the barriers that have previously hindered players from accessing authentic EVH sound, making it more portable and versatile than ever.”
“Whether in the studio or on stage, this amp provides that unmistakable EVH tone that has defined Eddie’s sound,” he adds.
According to EVH, the Hypersonic 6L6 delivers “EVH tone, volume, and dynamics that are virtually indistinguishable from the all-tube original,” thanks to its “massive digital processing power” that faithfully captures the essence of van Halen’s sound.
Designed with convenience in mind, this digital amp includes several noteworthy features. The rear panel offers power scaling with five attenuated settings ranging from one watt to 50 watts, a balanced XLR line out with impulse responses, and a silent switch for recording purposes.
Additional features include a headphone jack, MIDI input, a USB-C port for updates, and a cabinet simulation switch for toggling between impulse responses.
Weighing in at just 39 pounds, the Hypersonic 6L6 is approximately 40% lighter than the traditional Iconic Series 5150III 50W combo, which weighs 62 pounds. This significant reduction in weight enhances its portability.
The 5150III Hypersonic 6L6 is now available in both Black and ivory finishes, retailing for $1,699.99.
