What is the DOD 250-X?

The DOD 250 Overdrive Preamp was launched in 1974, shortly after the MXR Distortion+. While it closely resembles the MXR, the DOD⁢ features different component values and utilizes silicon diodes in its‍ distortion ⁣circuit.

The 250-X, which is the tenth version of the 250, is a mass-produced model that‍ includes the new three-position ‍switch,⁣ with the asymmetric clipping mode transitioning from germanium to silicon diodes.

Build Quality ⁣Rating: ★★★★½

As with all DOD pedals released as‌ the brand’s revival in the 2010s, the 250-X‌ is robust and‌ well-constructed. However, it lacks the‍ reversible backplate with integrated mounting features found in some higher-end models, which is a minor‌ drawback.

Usability Rating: ★★★★☆

With just two knobs (Gain ‍for preamp drive and Level for output volume) and ⁣a three-way⁢ switch, this pedal is incredibly user-kind.

The side-mounted jacks provide ample space and clear labeling, ensuring ease of use.The manual includes a helpful illustration suggesting ⁢the pedal’s placement⁤ at the beginning of your signal chain.

Sound Quality Rating: ★★★½☆

The DOD 250, MXR Distortion+, and ROSS Tan distortions exhibit only minor differences. Each has been endorsed by notable musicians-Randy Rhoads ‌was known for⁤ the MXR, while Yngwie⁢ Malmsteen favored the DOD.

Additionally, billy Corgan crafted his led tone by combining a ⁢Distortion+ with ⁢an op-amp Big Muff for enhanced sustain. Each of these pedals interacts dynamically with the pedals and amp that ⁢follow.

The DOD 250-X features a three-way switch for different voicings. The first position (up) utilizes the original silicon diode hard clipping, the second (middle) bypasses the clipping diodes,⁢ and the ‌third (down) offers an asymmetric clip, reminiscent of ⁢the ROSS Tan‌ distortion.

While some users may appreciate its stock tone, ⁢I found it somewhat lacking until I increased the level, allowing the amp to contribute substantially,⁣ especially with lower wattage models. Among the modes, the ROSS-like asymmetric ‍clip proved to be the most rewarding. As the gain increases, the tone ‍blends the hard clipping of the diodes with the op-amp’s character.

Regrettably, unlike the ProCo RAT,the op-amp’s clipping character can be ⁣somewhat muddy and less musical. This may limit the clean boost mode’s effectiveness depending on personal‌ taste.

Due to my preferences, I primarily⁢ used⁢ the pedal for stacking, regardless‍ of the mode. It excels in this capacity, producing tight lead tones and saturated chords when paired with the new DOD Badder monkey (set to ‘Bad’ or Tube Screamer ‍mode) and various fuzz pedals.

As a fan ⁢of Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, I often paired it with a collection of Big muffs. The asymmetric ⁤clip consistently delivered the best results, notably when used with a high-headroom Marshall amp.

Using a guitar or bass with a Russian Big Muff creates a sound reminiscent of Sonic Youth’s “100%,” thick and ⁢aggressive. Switching to an‍ op-amp Muff with a Les Paul⁣ neck pickup yields a robust rhythm tone that James Iha would appreciate.

On the neck pickup⁢ of a Strat, the 250-X’s effect is even more pronounced, smoothing out the Muff’s sustain for lead work, achieving a ‘violin-like’ smoothness akin to a transistor‌ Muff, while ‌retaining the⁢ punchy voicing and EQ profile of the ⁢op-amp Muff.⁢ It’s an addictive‌ combination for those who enjoy that ⁤sound.

Final⁣ thoughts

Ultimately, I found myself primarily using the pedal for stacking, regardless of the selected ⁣mode.

While the 250-X has its merits, it‍ is indeed a straightforward circuit, ‌and ‌there are more versatile options available. Its simplicity is both its strength and limitation-it offers a predictable tone with ample gain.

In front of a quality tube amp‍ or when stacked with other pedals, it excels at driving additional saturation from the following units.

Guitar World Verdict: the DOD 250-X represents a significant⁢ enhancement over the original 250. However, being a 50-year-old design, it shows its age. While it may not be as versatile as newer pedals, it remains a valuable tool for ‍stacking with other drives and fuzzes.
