Unforgettable Melodies: The Story Behind Little River Band’s “Reminiscing”
Little River Band’s guitarist, Graeham Goble, finds it easy to reflect on the iconic track “Reminiscing.” Released in 1978, this single became the Australian band’s most notable success in the United States, soaring to number three on both the Billboard 200 and Cash Box charts.
At the 1978 King of pop Awards, ”Reminiscing” was honored as the Australian Record of the year and received recognition from Broadcast Music International (BMI) for achieving five million plays on American radio-an unprecedented milestone for an Australian pop song at that time.
A Surprising Connection to John Lennon
Interestingly, the late John Lennon had a fondness for “Reminiscing” during his relationship with former assistant May Pang, which spanned the mid-1970s to the end of the decade. Goble recalls, ”In her book, Loving John, she mentioned how they would spend time in bed listening to the song, with him asking her to play it repeatedly. That was quite remarkable.”
From Inspiration to Creation
Originally featured as the second single from LRB’s fourth album,Sleeper Catcher,”Reminiscing” is now included in the band’s latest compilation,Ultimate Hits. Still based in Melbourne, where the band originated, Goble cherishes the memories associated with the song and its impact.
“the inspiration came from my admiration for musicals from the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s,” Goble shares. “I was just 12 when we got our first black-and-white television in Adelaide,and I fell in love with the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films,as well as the musicals by Rogers and Hammerstein. Much of my songwriting, especially ‘Reminiscing,’ reflects the life I dreamed of, placing myself in the romantic scenarios I saw on screen.”
The Birth of a Classic
The song was conceived in April 1977 while the band was in Melbourne for a television appearance. “We were in the green room, strumming our guitars,” Goble recalls. “David Briggs, our lead guitarist, introduced me to some jazz chords, including a C9 chord, which I had never encountered before.”
“After the show, I picked up my Martin 000-18 acoustic guitar and experimented with that chord. Suddenly, a melody and lyrics came to me as if they were a divine inspiration. Within half an hour, the song was complete, featuring unique key changes and intricate jazz chords-a truly elegant piece!”
Overcoming Challenges in Recording
Goble remembers that the band faced challenges while recording the song. “We attempted to record it twice before we found the right sound. I wanted Peter Jones on keyboards, but he was unavailable. The first replacement didn’t work out,and neither did the second.”
“When I learned that Peter was back in town, I convinced the band to give it one more shot, despite some reluctance, especially from vocalist Glenn Shorrock. Once we worked with Peter, everything clicked. Our guitarist Beeb Birtles added a syncopated riff that elevated the song beautifully.”
From Doubt to Success
Alongside “reminiscing,” Sleeper Catcher also featured “Lady,” another track that helped establish LRB’s presence in America. Despite the band’s confidence in their work, their label, Capitol Records, was initially skeptical. “We waited five weeks for feedback,” Goble recalls. “Eventually, they sent us a Telex saying they loved the album but couldn’t identify any singles, despite having ‘Reminiscing’ and ‘Lady’-our two biggest hits!”
Eventually, the label decided to take a chance on “Reminiscing.” “They admitted they were unsure if it would resonate. Though, within weeks, it skyrocketed to number one in New York and reached number three on Billboard.”
A Timeless Legacy
Goble considers “Reminiscing” to be the band’s signature song, noting that it has garnered double the listens of any other track in their catalog. “It has appeared in numerous films and soundtracks. Frank Sinatra even remarked that it was the best song of the ’70s,although he never recorded it.”
