The Birth of a classic
“While we were in the studio, my brother came up with a concept that wasn’t strictly reggae but certainly had a reggae vibe. That’s how Get Down on It was born,” Bell explained. ”At that moment, we were uncertain about what to name it, but we settled on Get Down on It. Little did we know it would become such a massive hit-it remains one of our most significant records.”
Upon its release, the track soared into the top 10 of both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts, and it reached number three on the UK charts, marking it as their highest-charting single in the UK at that time.
Sampling Success and Legacy
Kool & the Gang’s unique blend of genres and infectious grooves have made their music a favorite for sampling, a trend that continues to thrive today. Bell humorously noted, “Just ask Will Smith-he sampled our work, earned a platinum record, and transitioned into a accomplished film career.”
“Initially, we were thrilled when artists began sampling our music. However, we soon realized we needed to monitor who was using our tracks, so we established a ’sample patrol’,” Bell added. “Eventually, it became standard practice for record companies to charge for samples. As an inevitable result, we’ve become one of the most sampled groups in hip-hop history.”
