The band moves ‌in perfect harmony,weaving a vibrant soundscape that draws ‍inspiration from Sufi poetry and Indian ragas,alongside the legendary vibes of Jimi Hendrix and the psychedelic ⁢era of the ’60s.

Based in London, Karma Sheen is fronted by Khan and features an eclectic lineup: Rod Bourganos ⁢on sitar, synth, and theremin, ⁢Amad Chima on guitar, Grisha Grebennikov ‌on bass, and Arun ⁣Dhanjal on drums. This unique ensemble successfully merges ancient musical traditions with modern influences and diasporic creativity, ⁤a captivating blend that has even caught‌ the attention of rock icon Jimmy Page.

A Memorable Encounter with Rock Royalty

Reflecting on ⁤his frist meeting with Page, Khan recalls, “The first time he saw us was back in 2017, during the early days of⁢ Karma Sheen.” He adds, “It was nerve-wracking to perform in front of him, but I ⁢thought, ‘I have to⁢ focus on ⁣the audience here. Yes,‍ rock royalty is in the room, but I have a job to do.’”

Page’s unexpected praise was a significant moment for the band.​ “After the show,⁣ he saeid, ‘The way you blend rock with Indian music is something I’ve never encountered before.’” Khan notes the importance of this compliment coming ‍from someone who was a pioneer in introducing ⁤the sitar to​ Western music, having listened to Ravi Shankar long before it ​became mainstream.

From Wrestling Themes to Musical Dreams

“Take us back to the moment⁤ you first picked up the guitar,” we ask Khan. He shares, “I grew up immersed in pro wrestling, ⁤captivated by the ⁣entrance⁢ themes of legends ​like⁤ Kurt ⁢Angle and Shawn Michaels.It sparked my love for ‌rock music.”

His journey began in 2003 when he was inspired by the film School of Rock. “Watching it made me ⁣want to play guitar; I wanted to be Zack​ Mooneyham,”⁣ he ⁤recalls.”I remember pausing the DVD to jot down all​ the band‌ names Jack Black mentioned,‍ then seeking out‍ thier music.”

Rediscovering Hindustani Classical music

“Karma Sheen’s music is fundamentally rooted in Hindustani classical music,” Khan explains. “My family has always appreciated conventional⁢ music, particularly classical folk from Pakistan. They were close friends with Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan,a legendary figure in the khyal vocal ⁤genre.”

“My parents hosted concerts ​at home, and while ‌other kids played, ⁣I was captivated, absorbing every⁣ note.” His journey continued as​ he ⁣explored the sitar ⁣through Ravi Shankar’s music and delved into the​ sounds of the ’60s, ultimately leading him to Jimi Hendrix, whose style he sought to emulate.

One pivotal night, Khan sang with Shujat Ali Khan, Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan’s nephew, wich solidified his commitment to traditional music. “That experience made me realize I wanted to pursue⁣ singing and embrace a more classical approach,” he reflects.

The Influence of Classical Training on guitar Skills

Khan emphasizes the myth surrounding Hindustani classical music,stating,”Many believe you need a sitar to capture its magic,but it’s‌ all about the notes.” He explains that while microtones exist,​ they can be interpreted on the guitar. “As a notable example, ragas like⁤ Bageshree⁢ and Jog are pentatonic, and every ​guitarist knows the pentatonic scale.”

“My approach to soloing has shifted from ‌blues pentatonic to Hindustani classical pentatonic,” he​ adds. “We incorporate the notes from the ragas into our music, creating a unique sound‍ that resonates with our audience.”

Innovative Fusion of Ragas and psychedelic Rock

Khan ⁢believes Karma Sheen is pioneering a new sound. “While many bands have explored fusion, we’re ⁤charting new territory without a reference point. we draw inspiration from‍ songs like ‌Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced? and analyze how to incorporate those elements into our ragas.”

“Our mission is to be the custodians of this music while making it accessible.‌ This genre deserves more than just a meditative context; it can be enjoyed in a lively, rock-oriented atmosphere,” he asserts.

Playing for Legends

“You’ve gained a reputation as a Les Paul player. Why choose a Gibson Les Paul over a Stratocaster?” we ask. Khan admits, “I’m actually a Strat guy at‌ heart.But once you play a⁣ Les Paul, it’s hard to go back. The Strat feels like an extension of⁢ you, while the Les Paul is a powerhouse for riffs.”

“Playing a ’60s model Les Paul unlocks new possibilities for me,” he adds, highlighting the guitar’s unique capabilities.

Performing for Jimmy Page

When Page attended one of ⁣their shows, ​Khan describes the ⁢experience: “I often ‌forgot who he was because he felt like just ⁣another person. But then he’d make a ‍comment that reminded me, ‘Oh wow, this is Jimmy Page!’”

Rod, their sitar player, has a friendship with Page, which made the encounter feel more personal. “By the time he finally saw us perform, it was like meeting an ⁣old friend,” Khan shares.

“The highlight of ⁢Karma Sheen has ⁤been the entire⁤ journey-from writing my first song ⁤to performing ‍for Jimmy Page,” khan reflects. “We’ve⁤ gained respect from our peers and are carving out a unique identity.”
