Mastering the Bass: ashley Reeve’s Essential Tone Techniques
Ashley Reeve, the talented bassist for Cher, enjoys a unique vantage point in the dazzling world of one of music’s most iconic performers. From breathtaking choreography to stunning costume transformations,every show is a meticulously timed spectacle.
“Once the performance kicks off, it feels like an unstoppable force,” Reeve explains. “every element is synchronized – from the lighting to the choreography – so you need to be intimately familiar with the entire production.”
From Rock to Pop: A Journey of Growth
Before stepping into the role of Cher’s bassist, Reeve honed her skills in various musical environments. She previously played with the hard-hitting rock band Filter, where she collaborated with her husband, Chris Reeve, on drums. Additionally, she explored the eclectic sounds of artists like ceelo Green and Adam Lambert.
“my experiences with these bands prepared me for the Cher gig,” reeve reflects. “When I learned I would be performing with Cher, I dedicated an entire month to mastering the setlist.I wanted to ensure I was fully prepared, especially since we had limited rehearsal time compared to other artists.”
“During our first rehearsal, we played through the set once, and it went so smoothly that the music director called for a lunch break. After lunch, we ran through it again, and I felt confident. The chemistry was palpable, and everything was set for the performance.”
Preparing for the Cher Experience
Reeve’s readiness for the Cher gig stemmed from her diverse musical background.”When I got the call, I was asked if I could play upright bass and key bass,” she shares. ”I assured them I could learn quickly. They sent me the songs, and I spent 72 hours straight immersing myself in the key parts and building muscle memory. I played those tracks repeatedly; my husband joked that I could play them in my sleep.”
Adapting to Unique Bass Lines
One of the challenges Reeve faced was the syncopated nature of many of Cher’s songs. “The bass lines frequently enough emphasize the upbeats, which is contrary to my instinct as a bassist,” she explains. “I had to rewire my brain, but once I adapted, it became second nature.”
“I charted everything note-for-note. Transcribing the music allows for a deeper understanding than mere memorization,” she adds.
Dialing in the Perfect Tone
Reeve emphasizes the importance of hand placement in achieving the desired sound. “For a warm, rounded tone during ballads, I position my hand near the neck. For a brighter sound in funkier sections, I move my hand closer to the bridge. These subtle adjustments can considerably impact the overall tone.”

Reflecting on her time with Filter, Reeve shares, ”Playing alongside my husband as a rhythm section was astonishing. Our musical chemistry blossomed into a stunning relationship,and performing together has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Today’s gigging musicians must bring their unique voice while also being ready to adjust to the musical landscape around them.”
Memorable Moments in Music
Among the highlights of her career, Reeve recalls a special moment performing with Lionel Richie. “I had auditioned for him in the past and didn’t get the gig, which was fine as the person who did was phenomenal. However,getting to play with him at an awards show,even for just one song,was a dream come true. I remember thinking,’I can die happy now.’ It was a truly unforgettable experience.”
