How Stevie Ray Vaughan Spiced Up David Bowie’s ‘let’s Dance’ with BBQ and Guitar brilliance
In 1982, Stevie Ray Vaughan was a newcomer to the studio scene when he received an invitation from David Bowie to contribute guitar work on the iconic album Let’s Dance.
At that point, Vaughan was relatively obscure outside of Texas, where he was starting to gain traction with his band, Double Trouble. However, he had yet to release his groundbreaking debut album, texas Flood, which would soon establish him as one of the most revered guitarists of his era.
Reflecting on the experience, Vaughan shared with guitar Player in 1983, “The entire recording process was incredibly beneficial for me in many ways. I learned a great deal about playing,especially regarding recording techniques,and also the business side of music.”

Nile Rodgers, the album’s producer, noted that Vaughan quickly grasped not only the musical direction but also how to integrate himself into the collaborative surroundings. He arrived with his beloved “Number One” Fender Stratocaster and a 1964 Fender Vibroverb amp, ready to contribute.
Rodgers vividly recalls Vaughan’s reaction upon hearing the title track for the first time in the control room. “The expression on his face was one of awe, as if he realized he was part of something truly meaningful and magical. He was unsure how to fit in but instinctively understood he needed to enhance the music without overshadowing it.”
“I didn’t have to guide him; he instinctively recognized his role was to complement the music,like adding a delightful dessert to a fantastic meal,” Rodgers added. “and just like that, he nailed it.”
Vaughan also recognized the importance of building relationships within the studio. Observing the dedication of his fellow musicians and the limited time they had, he sought a way to express his gratitude.
“He wanted to connect with us, to be seen as part of the family,” Rodgers explained.”We were recording Let’s Dance with the understanding that we were making a record that reflected Black musical traditions. Unlike rock bands that could book studios for extended periods, we had to work within tighter budgets and time constraints.”
“We would order our meals at the start of the day so they would arrive during our lunch break. We’d eat quickly and than dive back into work,” he continued. “Stevie noticed this and decided to treat us. He called Sam’s BBQ in Austin to arrange lunch for the day he came in. We were unaware of this, and as we began placing our lunch orders, he announced, ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got lunch today.’”
