The Incredible Tale of Jerry Cantrell’s Missing Guitar
In April 2024, Jerry Cantrell faced a moment of panic when he believed his cherished 1984 “Blue Dress” G&L Rampage had vanished. This guitar, integral to his musical journey and a defining element of the grunge sound, was nowhere to be found.
“I was in a state of distress for three or four days,” he recounted in a recent interview with Guitar world. “We couldn’t locate it. It was during a pre-album phase, and with a video shoot and photo session on the agenda, things were chaotic, and I lost track of it.”
Fortunately, the “Blue Dress” G&L was merely misplaced. However, Cantrell has a history of guitar-related anxiety, having once lost a prized instrument for nearly two decades.
A Heart-Wrenching Loss
“I once had a guitar that held immense sentimental value go missing, and I was lucky enough to have it returned. It was a goldtop Music Man that Ed [Van Halen] gifted me,” he shared. “During a tour with Van Halen, I received two guitars from him.”
“One was a goldtop, and the other was a trans blue model that showcased the wood grain thru its finish. The goldtop went missing while I was working on Degradation Trip [his 2002 solo album]. I didn’t see it for 18 or 19 years. Its disappearance broke my heart as that guitar was a gift from my hero.”
As he previously mentioned in another Guitar World interview, “Someone took it from the A&M studio.” Though, two decades later,a couple of devoted Alice in Chains fans managed to track it down.
“They attempted to set up a sting operation on the individual who had it and was trying to sell it,” he explained.”The frist guy, from Florida, lost contact with the seller. The second was a collector from San Diego. together, they worked for about two weeks to help me reclaim that guitar… after 19 long years!”
The Emotional Toll of Losing a Guitar
Thus, the thought of losing the G&L, even for a few days, was understandably distressing for Cantrell. ”when I feared that the G&L was gone for good, I felt crushed for a couple of days,” he admitted.
Luckily, the Rampage hadn’t been stolen; it had simply been misplaced.
