Bill Frisell at 75: A Journey Through Sound and collaboration
It’s no surprise that Bill Frisell felt a sense of disbelief when he curated the ensemble for his latest project, In My Dreams. With over fifty years of redefining modern jazz,the Baltimore-born guitarist has explored a myriad of musical formats,from intimate duos to grand orchestral arrangements.
Now at 75, Frisell is still riding the wave of excitement after performing last year with a dream team of musicians he deeply admires: Jenny Scheinman (violin), Eyvind Kang (viola), Hank Roberts (cello), Thomas Morgan (bass), and Rudy Royston (drums). This collaboration culminated in a live album released under the prestigious Blue Note label.

“I’ve been performing frequently as a trio with Thomas and Rudy, but it had been quite a while since I shared the stage with Jenny, Eyvind, and Hank,” Frisell recalls. “One morning, I had this vision of merging both experiences. I’m not the sole focus; what truly excites me is being part of a collective conversation.”
Exploring Freedom in Performance
Frisell elaborates on the band’s creative process: “Initially, I compose the music, and we all follow the same score. There might be discussions about who plays what, but after years of collaboration, they begin to make their own choices. That’s where the thrill lies-it’s as if they’re improvising the arrangement, blurring the lines between solo, accompaniment, and orchestration, allowing the music to evolve organically.”
“In our performances, there are no mistakes. If someone strays, we guide them back rather than call them out. Each recording captures a moment in time, but it’s just the beginning. The next performance is a fresh opportunity to explore new avenues, even if we play the same pieces in the same order.”

“When the band truly synchronizes, it’s a palpable sensation,” Frisell shares. “Playing a melody with someone else and feeling it lock in creates an extraordinary experience. It’s as if our fingers meld into the instrument,producing a sound that transcends individual contributions,transforming into a unique entity.”

What dream inspired the creation of this album?
Though it may have been nearly four decades ago, the memory remains incredibly vivid. I found myself in an ancient house, ascending a shadowy staircase that led to a library. There, I encountered small figures cloaked in brown hoods who welcomed me warmly.They expressed a desire to show me the true essence of colors, unveiling a vibrant red cube that was unlike anything I had ever seen.
Next, they aimed to reveal the essence of authentic music. Suddenly, I felt a sensation akin to a drill penetrating my forehead, flooding my mind with every musical sound I had ever experienced, all at once. yet, rather than chaos, it was a beautifully intricate sound, rich in detail and clarity.
This dream has lingered in my mind ever as. While I may not have fully realized that vision in this album, it remains a guiding aspiration.

Are there similarities between dreaming and musical performance?
This is something I ponder frequently. Upon waking from a dream,regardless of whether it was joyful,frightening,or neutral,the experience fades away. This fleeting nature reminds me of performing music. When you are fully immersed in the moment, the instant you become aware of it, it slips away.
My admiration for Billy Strayhorn as a composer is profound; it feels like sacred ground.Just being able to express something meaningful through his song with these talented musicians fills me with pride.
While it’s a collaborative effort, what are your personal highlights on guitar?
I felt particularly satisfied with my rendition of Isfahan. My respect for Billy Strayhorn’s composition is immense, and the opportunity to convey a statement through that piece alongside these musicians is something I cherish. It has taken me years to feel deserving of performing it in concert.
When you analyze it mathematically-considering the harmony, melody, and note selection-it’s extraordinary. Though, the real challenge is internalizing it until it becomes second nature.When I play it, I aim to reach a point where I’m not consciously thinking about the notes, but rather expressing the melody as if I were singing through the guitar.
What stands out in your memory about the album recording process?
The recordings were sourced from three distinct venues: a charming old hall in Brooklyn known as Roulette, a cozy spot in Connecticut, and a concert in Denver where the band was unaware they were being recorded, which added an element of surprise.
We then faced the task of editing the recordings together, a process I had never undertaken before. It involved blending melodies from Brooklyn with those from denver, and our engineer skillfully created a cohesive sound that felt unified.

Why did you choose to exclusively use your modified JW Black Telecaster for this recording?
for starters,it’s incredibly agreeable,featuring a slightly shorter scale than a standard Fender. I rarely use the bridge pickup; instead, I rely solely on the TK Smith neck pickup. While I’m not entirely sure how it works, it’s a single coil that operates without any noise interference, thanks to a metal ring surrounding it-though I’m not certain if that’s the reason for its quietness.
I appreciate the sound of single coils, like P-90s, but they can often be problematic due to buzzing in various environments. Though, the TK Smith pickup remains completely silent. It delivers a rich low-end while maintaining clarity, warmth, and definition without becoming muddy or shrill.
Additionally, I’ve been using flat-wound strings for several years instead of round-wound, which I believe significantly enhances the attack on the lower notes.

What equipment did you use for this album?
I continuously experiment. I don’t often revisit my older works intentionally, but occasionally, I’ll stumble upon something on YouTube and think, ‘Wow, how did I manage to do that?’
During the Brooklyn performance, I was at home, so I used my personal amp, a Carr Sportsman. It’s similar to a Princeton in power-perhaps slightly more-but features a single 12-inch speaker. For the other concerts, I borrowed a Fender Deluxe Reverb reissue.
As for pedals, my setup is quite minimal. I utilize a Strymon Flint, along with some looping effects and unique sounds from the Line 6 DL4, which is the newer, compact version. I also have the Jam Pedals Rattler and occasionally incorporate an MXR Carbon Copy.
This album coincides with your 75th birthday.Do you believe jazz musicians improve with age?
I certainly hope so! I strive to keep improving. I don’t consciously revisit my past performances, but sometimes I come across old recordings and think, ‘How did I even play that?’
It’s hard to say if I’ve improved or not. Occasionally, I’m amazed by what I was able to play years ago, while at other times, I find myself questioning my choices back then.

Do you recognize the young musician from the ECM label in the ’80s?
I used to rely heavily on a volume pedal, and now it drives me a bit crazy when I hear it in my old recordings.
You’ve mentioned before that musicians frequently enough focus too much on their gear.
absolutely.I believe our minds are the most powerful tools we possess. Our inventiveness is key. If you have the music in your head, that’s what truly matters.
are you satisfied with In My Dreams?
I’m as pleased as I can be. The music is always evolving, and I have to come to terms with the idea that we need to stop at some point and accept that we’ve captured a moment. I’m very happy with the album, but as soon as I finish one project, I’m already looking forward to the next.
