Graham Coxon reflects on His Iconic ‌Blur Guitar setup: A Shift⁤ in Viewpoint

With the ‌much-anticipated‌ reunion of ‌Oasis, ⁢Britpop is once again capturing the ⁢attention of‍ music enthusiasts. However, Blur’s guitarist, Graham Coxon, has expressed⁤ some reservations⁤ about his legendary guitar rig.

During the peak of their rivalry, ‍Oasis and‍ Blur were known ‍for their eclectic pedalboards and powerful soundscapes, battling for dominance in the British rock scene.

In 1996, Oasis performed to a staggering crowd ‌of 125,000 at ⁤Knebworth, with Noel Gallagher’s pedalboard being‌ a ‌simple piece of plywood. Similarly, Coxon’s ⁤setup was⁤ straightforward yet notoriously ‍challenging to manage.

“I had this ridiculous pedalboard during the Blur era,” Coxon shared in a recent interview with Guitar ⁣World. “It was this massive contraption ‍that, ⁢when activated, outshone the⁤ stage lights. I’d be frantically trying to engage a⁣ Rat pedal, but it was impractical to see!”

As technology ‍has ⁣evolved since⁤ the ’90s, Coxon finds his rig feeling somewhat outdated. He’s not ⁢reminiscing about his Blur gear with nostalgia; rather,⁤ he’s open to embracing modern advancements.

“Back than, I had everything I needed,” he reflects. “But now that I’m older, I’m reconsidering my ⁣long-standing use of Marshalls for 35 years.”

“They sounded fantastic,but they ⁤were incredibly loud… a 100-watt ⁣beast!⁣ Recently,I’ve⁢ been‌ pondering,’What about exploring more Fender amps?⁣ what about headroom?’ I’ve been giving it⁢ a lot of thought.”

“When I switch ⁣my fuzz pedal on and off,‌ I want it to blow people away. It’s⁢ a delicate balance between headroom ‌and deciding whether to stick with⁣ a Marshall, try a Fender, or even a 20-watt hamstead, ⁢which‌ I ⁢use with my‌ band, The Weave,‍ featuring Rose Elinor‌ Dougall.”

Coxon’s exploration of new pedals ‍has led⁣ him to collaborate ‌with JAM Pedals, a brand known for‍ its‍ innovative ‌designs, including a fresh take on the Rat pedal. He’s‌ also⁣ experimenting with a variety of sounds.

“As a kid,I ⁣had a Rat pedal,” Coxon reminisces. ‌”I’d simply ⁣engage‌ it during the chorus and switch it off⁤ for the ⁢verses. It was ⁢that straightforward.”

“Now,there are phasers, flangers, compressors… it’s ⁤unbelievable how many options are available. Then‍ there’s the ⁢plasma Coil pedal from Third Man Hardware and Gamechanger audio…‍ I can’t imagine my setup ⁢without it.”

The Plasma Coil, a unique distortion and ‌overdrive pedal, stands⁣ out in today’s crowded pedal market,⁤ which can often feel overwhelming for ‌artists⁣ like ⁣Coxon.

In another part ‍of his interview with Guitar world, Coxon reflected⁣ on a pivotal moment when Damon Albarn dismissed an entire album of ⁣Blur tracks, inadvertently launching his solo career.

Stay⁢ tuned for‍ the complete interview with‌ Coxon, set to be released online soon.
