Graham Coxon reflects on His Iconic Blur Guitar setup: A Shift in Viewpoint

“I had this ridiculous pedalboard during the Blur era,” Coxon shared in a recent interview with Guitar World. “It was this massive contraption that, when activated, outshone the stage lights. I’d be frantically trying to engage a Rat pedal, but it was impractical to see!”
As technology has evolved since the ’90s, Coxon finds his rig feeling somewhat outdated. He’s not reminiscing about his Blur gear with nostalgia; rather, he’s open to embracing modern advancements.
“Back than, I had everything I needed,” he reflects. “But now that I’m older, I’m reconsidering my long-standing use of Marshalls for 35 years.”
“They sounded fantastic,but they were incredibly loud… a 100-watt beast! Recently,I’ve been pondering,’What about exploring more Fender amps? what about headroom?’ I’ve been giving it a lot of thought.”
“When I switch my fuzz pedal on and off, I want it to blow people away. It’s a delicate balance between headroom and deciding whether to stick with a Marshall, try a Fender, or even a 20-watt hamstead, which I use with my band, The Weave, featuring Rose Elinor Dougall.”

Coxon’s exploration of new pedals has led him to collaborate with JAM Pedals, a brand known for its innovative designs, including a fresh take on the Rat pedal. He’s also experimenting with a variety of sounds.
“As a kid,I had a Rat pedal,” Coxon reminisces. ”I’d simply engage it during the chorus and switch it off for the verses.It was that straightforward.”
“Now,there are phasers,flangers,compressors… it’s unbelievable how many options are available. Then there’s the plasma Coil pedal from Third Man Hardware and Gamechanger audio… I can’t imagine my setup without it.”
