what makes your ’63 Stratocasters so notable to you?

There’s an undeniable charm ⁤in the ’63 models from that⁤ era.fender truly struck gold with these guitars. Each time you pick one up, you can feel the quality-some are just exceptional. The consistency in neck shape and overall feel is remarkable, making them⁢ a joy to play.

The two Strats I own, from August and September of ’63, each have their unique character, yet both resonate perfectly with me. The pickups in these guitars​ are⁢ simply outstanding.

Meet ‘Big Daddy’ and ‘Mother’

One of my favorites, affectionately⁤ named ‘Big Daddy,’ produces the most powerful, wide-ranging sound I’ve ever encountered ⁢in a Strat. It has an astonishing punch. The other, which I call ‘Mother,’ features ’58 pickups, giving it a lighter, more ethereal quality while still retaining that classic ’63 depth.

Have you made any modifications or performed maintenance on your guitars?

Absolutely, I’ve made ⁤some adjustments.I’ve refretted them multiple times using the widest and tallest ‌fretwire available. as my playing style heavily⁢ relies on bending notes, this setup enhances‍ the feel and durability.

I tried to preserve the original pots for as long as possible, even when it affected the tone.Eventually, they deteriorated to the point‌ where replacement was necessary. Additionally,some saddles ⁢became immovable,prompting me to replace a few of‌ those as ⁣well.

It was always a dream of mine. My musical idols-clapton, ⁢stevie ​Ray Vaughan, Knopfler, Buddy guy-were all​ associated with these guitars. ‍I frequently heard‌ from fellow musicians and collectors that the‍ ’62 and ’63 models were the pinnacle of‌ vintage Strats. A friend of mine played a pivotal role​ in introducing‌ me to these iconic instruments.

it’s ‌not that contemporary builders are lacking skill; rather, the wood used⁣ in ​vintage guitars, ⁣aged over 60 years, has‍ dried⁤ and settled in a unique way. When these instruments were crafted, the wood could have​ been over a century old. While modern guitars can come close, there remains a‍ subtle difference in resonance and the wood’s age that is hard to replicate.

Pickups also play a crucial ⁣role in sound quality. ⁢There’s a common misconception that overwinding‍ pickups yields better ⁣results, but that’s not always the case.​ As an example, the pickups in ‘Mother’ are from 1958 and are slightly underwound, ⁣yet they produce a fantastic sound.

Additionally, Sayce collaborated with Seymour Duncan to recreate the pickups from ‘Mother.’ This⁤ project allowed him to delve into the intricacies of ⁤what gives those pickups their distinctive sound. The results were notable, with the Duncan Mother pickups delivering exceptional audio quality.

Do you notice a difference in your playing style based on the guitar you use?

Not significantly. While each guitar has its unique feel, the real difference lies in how they respond to my ⁢playing. vintage guitars, once properly set ⁤up by a skilled luthier, feel like a⁤ well-worn ‍pair of jeans or a favorite baseball glove-irreplaceable and cozy. The ⁣Silver Sky⁣ is also very comfortable, and I often use it to warm up before performances.

Which guitars do you typically‍ take on tour?

Usually, I travel with just two guitars:‌ ‘Big Daddy’ and the Silver Sky. Occasionally, I might bring an‌ additional guitar, but those two cover a wide range of sounds. Ideally, I would love to bring ten guitars, but practicality dictates that I work with what I can carry.

When did you start to delve deeper into tone beyond just the guitars themselves?

Playing alongside Jeff Healey pushed me to explore this. ​His Marshalls had a massive sound on stage, and⁤ I needed something that ‌could match that power.

Sharing the stage ⁤with Jeff Healey was a turning point for Sayce. His impressive Marshall amps created ⁤a colossal sound that demanded⁢ a response.While touring with Jeff, Sayce reached out to Cesar Diaz, a legendary amp technician known for his work⁤ with Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Sayce sent Diaz a ⁢late-’60s‌ 100-watt Fender Dual Showman head, and the results were transformative. When he received it back, the​ amp delivered an incredible punch, sustain, and clarity that he had never experienced before.

Later, Diaz invited Sayce to stay at his workshop for a few days, where he brought along a ​Super Reverb and a⁣ Bassman for Diaz to work on. ‌This hands-on experience allowed Sayce to provide ‌feedback while Diaz crafted custom pedals for him. Remarkably, diaz was able to fine-tune Sayce’s Super Reverb in just 20 minutes, showcasing his exceptional skill.

Watching Cesar work was like witnessing magic unfold before my eyes.”

Speaker Selection: A Game Changer

Did this experience influence your choice of speakers?

Definitely.When I brought my Super Reverb to Cesar, ​it had 40-watt Naylor 10-inch speakers. While he thought they⁤ sounded decent, he knew I could achieve better results.That’s when he introduced me to Electro-Voice speakers.

Since then, I’ve primarily used EVM12Ls in my touring cabinets, especially while performing with Jeff Healey and later with Melissa Etheridge.Their​ strength and reliability are ⁤unmatched. Once you experience the power of a ‍4×12 cabinet with EVs, it’s hard to⁢ go back ​to anything else.

For over 15 years, I’ve collaborated‌ closely with Tommy ‌cougar, an exceptional amp designer from Sweden. In my opinion, he’s the best amp technician alive today, having studied the works of both Cesar Diaz and Alexander Dumble.
