Highlights of 2025: This holiday season, GW is celebrating its most captivating stories from the past year.
Blues-rock sensation Marcus King has been on an impressive trajectory since the debut of Soul Insight in 2014.
Throughout his journey, King has collaborated with renowned figures like rick Rubin and Dan Auerbach. Recently,he had the honour of playing legendary guitars, including Rory Gallagher’s iconic white Fender Telecaster and Jeff Beck’s celebrated Yardburst Les Paul during live performances.
Along with these historic instruments, King has been showcasing some remarkable vintage guitars of his own, one of which he amusingly forgot he had purchased…
“I’ve been jamming on a ’66 Esquire,” he shared with Guitar World. “I had a bit too much to drink and completely blanked on buying it. The team at Carter Vintage reached out to me, asking, ‘Are you coming to pick up your guitar?’ It’s probably the only positive outcome from my drinking escapades.”
Interestingly, King revealed that he prefers to explore other instruments when at home. “When I’m relaxing, I don’t often pick up the guitar,” he admitted. “I enjoy playing the piano, pedal steel, fiddle, banjo, ukulele… basically anything but the guitar.”

“The guitar is something I know intimately,” he reflects on his approach to music. “It’s akin to riding a bike or communicating in English. If I were to live in a spanish-speaking country for six months,I wouldn’t forget how to speak English.”
“The guitar is deeply ingrained in my identity. I enjoy experimenting with various instruments, which enhances my guitar playing when I return to it. I was inspired by Victor Wooten’s book, the Music lesson, where he emphasizes the significance of being a musician rather than just a bass player. This philosophy resonates with me. It’s a sacred experience to sit with a guitar and express my thoughts.”
In addition to playing historic guitars,King has recently launched his own ES-345 signature model with Gibson. Moreover, he has released his eagerly awaited new album, Darling Blue, alongside the marcus King Band.
