Given the enduring popularity of the ’60s Precision aesthetic, this latest iteration resembles many of Fender’s other P-Bass models-especially if you remove the plastic tug bar from the scratchplate.
Fortunately, this black variant features a matching headstock-a rare and desirable custom touch on original ’60s Fenders, which considerably enhances its visual appeal.
One downside noted in our review sample is that the Fender logo has some rough edges from its request-not something you’d expect on a £300 instrument, let alone one priced at £1,099.
Aside from this cosmetic flaw,the overall build quality is impressive-the neck pocket is snug,and the entire instrument resonates beautifully.
The maple neck is finished in a vintage amber hue, topped with a rich, dark round-laminated rosewood fretboard. The radius is a classic 7.25″, featuring narrow and tall frets.

Fortunately, the truss rod didn’t require adjustment-it features the traditional style with a screw head located at the neck heel, which means the entire neck may need to be removed for adjustments.
The alder body is comfortably weighted,and the neck’s ‘Late ’60s C’ profile is excellent,providing enough substance for the typical P-Bass nut width while remaining slim enough for players with smaller hands. Though, the steep fretboard radius and slightly sticky gloss finish may not suit everyone.
Out of the box, the action is set relatively high; I opted to lower the bridge saddles for a more pleasant playing experience. Thankfully, the truss rod didn’t need any adjustments-it’s one of the traditional types with a screw head at the neck heel, meaning the entire neck might need to be detached for any necessary tweaks.
After adjusting the saddles slightly lower, the playability noticeably enhances, allowing for a more enjoyable experience with the comfortable neck profile and the classic P-Bass feel.

Using my standard Line 6 HX Stomp setup, I selected a few favorite presets that emulate vintage bass tones, including an Ampeg B-15, an Acoustic 360, and a gritty Ampeg SVT for some high-gain experimentation.
The charm of a classic Precision Bass lies in its simplicity; you can plug it in,crank both controls to maximum,and it instantly delivers that iconic old-school Precision Bass sound.
The high frequencies are slightly more muted compared to some other Precision Basses.
The bass delivers a robust low-midrange presence and a growl in the upper mids, enhanced by the relatively new strings. The Fender Late ’60s split-coil pickup offers a rich bass and low-mid response that would pair beautifully with flat-wound strings.
On the flip side, the high frequencies are a bit more restrained than what you might find in other Precision Basses; while it’s not overly muddy, it does come across as more refined compared to my preferred Precision-style bass.
If your playing style leans towards modern rock, you might want to consider a hotter or brighter pickup. However,for the vintage sound that fender aims to capture,this setup is spot on.

To fully embrace its retro character, you might want to opt for a different finish (as an example, the stunning Firemist Gold, which is very reminiscent of the ’60s); even with the matching headstock, this black version tends to blend in with the multitude of other black P-Basses.
This is somewhat disappointing, as the essence of a vintage reissue is to evoke a specific time period, which this bass otherwise achieves with confidence.
