Behind the Scenes with Jimi Hendrix: Eric Barrett’s Hilarious Onstage Mishap
Fans of Jimi Hendrix are in for a treat as Eric Barrett,a former roadie for the legendary guitarist, shares his captivating experiences in his new book,Experienced: On the Road With Jimi Hendrix and Beyond, set to release on August 4 from Diversion Books.
The Start of an Unforgettable Journey
Barrett’s journey with Hendrix began on May 23, 1968, during a chaotic concert in Milan, Italy. The show was marred by electrical issues that caused Hendrix’s amplifiers to fail.Frustrated, Hendrix vented his anger on both the equipment and the young Barrett, who quickly realized why the previous roadie had left mid-tour.
A Change of Heart
However, as Barrett recounts in an excerpt featured in The sunday Times, the very next day, Hendrix was all apologies, reassuring Barrett that everything would improve from that point onward.
“Being around Jimi, you promptly felt the aura of a star,” Barrett reflects. “I was more than willing to stay on; his words were magnetic.”
Guitar Destruction and Creative Outbursts
Even during his more composed moments, hendrix was notorious for destroying guitars throughout that brief tour in Italy and switzerland. Barrett took it upon himself to inform Hendrix which guitars were expendable, hoping to save the pristine models from his wrath. Unfortunately, his efforts were not always triumphant.
“I vividly recall one stunning fender Stratocaster; I watched in disbelief as he wrecked it during the encore in Bologna,” Barrett shares.
“After the show, I asked him, ‘Why did you do that?’ His response is etched in my memory: ‘Eric, I just couldn’t extract anything more from it. I squeezed every note and sound it had to offer. It was done.’”
Memorable Moments at the Isle of Wight
One of Barrett’s most unforgettable experiences with hendrix occurred at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 31,1970. This performance was meaningful for several reasons, including the involvement of david Gilmour, who assisted with Hendrix’s sound that night.
Barrett recalls another amusing incident: during a notably energetic performance, Hendrix split his pants while executing his signature moves on stage-without wearing any underwear. Barrett immediately sensed something was amiss when Hendrix gestured to him in an unusual manner.
“Jimi moved to the side of the stage and said, ‘Can you grab me a safety pin and a towel?’” Barrett writes. “I raised an eyebrow. ‘I’ve split my pants. And I’m not wearing any underwear.’”
Covering for a Legend
Bass guitarist Billy Cox noted that the wardrobe malfunction happened right after Hendrix performed the splits during “Foxey Lady.” In the meantime, Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell filled the gap with an impromptu jam session while Hendrix discreetly repaired his pants behind his amplifier.
Barrett recalls Hendrix showing him the chords to play while he fixed the split. “All the crew and artists watching from the side, including Pete Townshend from The Who, laughed at my excited use of the whammy bar,” Barrett explains. “I got so caught up in the feedback from the amps that I started hitting the guitar with my fist.”

Interestingly, during the bass-and-drum solo, no guitar could be heard on the recording, although radio interference was evident.
This performance at the Isle of Wight would be one of Hendrix’s final shows, as he tragically passed away less than three weeks later, on September 18, 1970.
