“We were set to open for ZZ Top at Madison Square Garden, and while our first album was ready, it hadn’t yet been released,” Sambora recounted. “We were just a group of ambitious kids with dreams of playing at such an iconic venue. In hindsight, we probably weren’t fully prepared for it. While the band had talent, we lacked the necessary support and infrastructure.”
“Understanding the audience was crucial, so I suggested to the band, ‘I’ll play a solo for about a minute, then we’ll kick off our first song.’ however, as soon as I struck the first chord, my Marshall amp malfunctioned,” he continued.
“I had a backup amp, but switching it took about 45 seconds, during which the crowd began chanting, ‘Z-Z-Top! Z-Z-Top!’ Consequently, we managed to condense our 40-minute set into just 19 minutes.”
