The Evolution of Sound: Ken Lawrence’s Journey from Bass to Guitar with james Hetfield
For nearly thirty years, luthier Ken Lawrence has been the creative force behind some of the most legendary guitars in the metal genre, particularly for Metallica’s frontman, James Hetfield. Among his most celebrated creations is ‘Carl’, a guitar crafted from wood sourced from metallica’s roots in the 1980s.
From Bassist to Guitar Maker
Interestingly, Lawrence’s background is in bass guitar crafting. His initial success came from impressing Hetfield with his bass designs, which ultimately led to a pivotal guitar commission.
The Catalyst for Collaboration
In a recent conversation with Guitar World, Lawrence shared the story of how his partnership with Hetfield began. The connection was sparked by Doug West, a key figure at Mesa/Boogie, who introduced Lawrence to the Metallica guitarist.
“I met Doug West from Mesa/Boogie, and we quickly became friends. At that time, I was focused on building basses,” Lawrence recounted. “I spent considerable time at Mesa’s workshop, jamming with Doug and leaving my instruments there for visitors to check out.”
It was during one of these sessions that West took one of lawrence’s basses to a Metallica rehearsal, where they were fine-tuning their guitar setups. This was during the era of Jason Newsted, the band’s former bassist, and the intention was to see if he might be interested in the instrument.
Hetfield’s Interest
Though,it was Hetfield who became intrigued by Lawrence’s craftsmanship. “He examined the bass closely, flipping it over and studying it intently. then he expressed a desire to meet,” Lawrence recalled. The only hitch? Lawrence had no guitars to showcase, as his focus remained on basses.
“I arrived for the meeting with a car full of basses! I laid them out, and he walked in and said, ‘Alright, let’s create a guitar.’ that’s how it all began, and it’s been an unbelievable journey since,” he added.
The First Guitar: A Milestone Moment
The inaugural guitar Lawrence crafted for Hetfield was an Explorer-style model, inspired by one of Hetfield’s favorite ESP guitars. “He mentioned that this was a model he frequently played. He wanted something similar, and I knew I had to nail this first one if I wanted to continue our collaboration. Fortunately, it exceeded both our expectations,” Lawrence explained.
Looking ahead: Future Collaborations
As for what lies ahead in the Hetfield-Lawrence partnership, the luthier hinted at exciting possibilities. “He’s an incredibly creative individual with some fantastic ideas. We’ve completed seven guitars together, and I believe he’s contemplating an eighth. Fingers crossed!”
