Unveiling the Jazzmaster Silencers: A Harmonious Fusion of Classic Sound and Modern Innovation
Seymour Duncan has unveiled its latest innovation: the Jazzmaster Silencer guitar pickups. According to the brand, these pickups promise to deliver “classic tone with zero hum.”
While the claim of maintaining the iconic Jazzmaster essence while eradicating unwanted noise is one we’ve encountered before—often with disappointing results—it’s tough to overlook the impressive tones showcased in Seymour duncan’s demo.Producer Bobbing from Berkeley, California, crafts some of the most captivating Jazzmaster sounds we’ve heard in recent memory.
The Jazzmaster Silencers build upon the success of Seymour Duncan’s acclaimed Silencer P90 pickups, which utilize a similar innovative technology.
Two Distinct Variants: Vintage and Hot
The Jazzmaster silencer comes in two versions: Vintage and Hot. The Vintage Silencers are designed to “produce the bright, punchy cleans and warm, mellow growls that characterize the Jazzmaster sound,” making them ideal for surf-inspired riffs, shimmering indie textures, and pedal-driven soundscapes. On the other hand, the Hot Silencers “retain all the Jazzmaster character you adore, but with increased output and enhanced power, perfect for gritty rock, shoegaze, or experimental tones.”
seymour Duncan emphasizes the importance of noiseless designs, notably for Jazzmaster players who frequently utilize fuzz pedals and other high-gain effects. “When stacking overdrives and fuzzes, which pair exceptionally well with the Jazzmaster sound, the noise can become amplified throughout your signal chain, leading to a harsh output from your amp that can disrupt your overall sound,” they explain.
Innovative Technology Behind the Silencers
While numerous hum-cancelling single-coil pickups exist, each with unique advantages, many fail to achieve the goal of replicating vintage tone without noise. Seymour Duncan elaborates on the shortcomings of typical stacked pickups: “with stacked humbuckers, while noise is eliminated, you often encounter phase cancellation issues that diminish low-end response and overall output. To compensate, stacked humbuckers are usually overwound, which can further reduce high-end clarity.”
The Silencer pickups, though, tackle the notorious 60-cycle hum “thanks to a patent-pending triple coil design.” This innovative design ensures that all three coils are in phase with one another, eliminating phase cancellation and preserving both high and low-end frequencies. The outer coils effectively cancel hum, while the center coil delivers the authentic Jazzmaster tone.
Seymour Duncan initially launched the Silencer series with the Jared James Nichols signature P90, setting a high standard for future pickups.
