“The last time I saw Frank Zappa was just months before he passed away in December 1993,” Belew shared. “I visited him at his home, and he looked like the image I posted, which was quite shocking.”
“Frank was clearly unwell, his voice barely above a whisper,” he continued. “He seemed much older than his 52 years, appearing weak and fatigued. Instead of his usual espresso, he was sipping freshly squeezed orange juice prepared by his maid.”
During their brief interaction, Zappa mentioned a new project before he grew too tired and excused himself to rest. “Our time together was short-lived,” Belew reflected.
A Lasting Connection
Belew’s relationship with Zappa began in the late 1970s when he was performing with a Nashville cover band called Sweetheart. Zappa noticed Belew at a local venue and eventually invited him for an audition. Belew spent about a year with Zappa’s band, contributing to the 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti and the concert film Baby Snakes.
Despite the brevity of his time with Zappa, Belew considers it a pivotal experience. “it was the first and only time I received serious mentorship,” he remarked about his time working with Zappa.
A Dream and a Heartfelt Call
However, Belew prefers to cherish a different memory of Zappa, one that occurred about a year prior to their last meeting. “I’d rather hold onto a more uplifting moment,” he wrote.”One night in late 1992, I awoke from a vivid dream.”
In this dream,he and Zappa were joyfully discussing music as friends. Unable to return to sleep, Belew went downstairs and sent Zappa a fax detailing the dream and expressing his gratitude for Zappa’s influence on his career.

unbeknownst to Belew at the time, Zappa was gravely ill. “Later that day, I received a call from Frank – what a delightful surprise! He said, ‘That was sweet’ – a phrase you wouldn’t typically associate with the sharp-witted satirist.”
“He said to me, ’That was sweet’ – not a word you would normally associate with the acerbic, edgy satirist.”

The two engaged in a warm and meaningful conversation that mirrored the essence of Belew’s dream. “And that’s how I choose to remember Frank,” he concluded.
Belew’s Health Journey
Belew has faced his own health challenges recently, undergoing surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome in his left hand after the last Beat tour. The demanding performances had begun to affect his ability to play. “It would go numb,” he explained. “At times, it would remain numb from the moment I woke up until soundcheck.”
“It was a bit alarming,” he added. “I’d think, ‘Oh boy, you better wake up soon!’”
As he prepares for Beat’s return to the stage on October 9, fans hope for a smooth and accomplished tour ahead.
