Adrian Smith’s Journey: From Gibson Les Pauls to Signature Jackson Guitars
Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden has shared the story behind his shift to Jackson Guitars, attributing his decision to a meaningful issue he faced with his Gibson Les Paul.
As joining the legendary British metal band during the recording of their second album, Killers, Smith has evolved into one of Jackson’s most prominent endorsers, leading to the creation of a line of signature guitars tailored to his style.
Smith’s dissatisfaction with his Les paul, notably its tuning stability during tours, became the catalyst for his transition. He recalls, “Grover Jackson himself would attend our shows in California. He was incredibly approachable and easy to converse with.”
“At that time, I was struggling with tuning issues on my Les Paul, wich was incredibly frustrating,” he added. Recognizing an prospect, Grover Jackson began to introduce Smith to his innovative guitars.
“He would bring these guitars to the shows, some of which were still in the raw wood stage. He would swap out pickups right there backstage, saying, ‘Give this a try,’ and I would take it out for the performance that night,” Smith reminisces.

Once Smith was fully engaged, he received an invitation to visit the Jackson factory, where the concept for his signature Stratocaster began to take shape, featuring a Charvel San Dimas body.
“During my visit to the factory,I replicated the neck of an old Strat. That became the foundation of my guitar, with several enhancements. The truss rod was designed for easier access, allowing adjustments without removing the neck. It’s an remarkable instrument—playable, reliable, and with fantastic sound quality,” he explained.

While Smith acknowledges that his guitar has undergone “a few minor modifications over the years,” it has largely remained faithful to its original design, which blends Stratocaster elements with a metal aesthetic. He emphasizes the importance of getting it right from the start, stating, “If I have to tinker with a guitar to much, I tend to lose interest.” His first signature model was launched in 2007.
In addition to his guitar endeavors, Smith has shared how he persevered through a hangover to record a solo for Powerslave, marking a pivotal moment in Iron Maiden’s evolution from punk roots to global metal icons.
Looking ahead, smith is gearing up for a new collaborative album with Richie Kotzen, former guitarist for Poison and Winery Dogs. The duo, aptly named Smith-Kotzen, previously exchanged signature guitars during their debut album in 2021.
