Linda Perry Recalls the Day She Kicked Billy corgan Out of the Studio
In a candid conversation with NME, Linda Perry shared a memorable incident where she had to remove Billy Corgan from a recording session with Courtney Love, citing his negative energy as a major disruptor.
The Mood Killer
Perry, now 61, reflected on the moment, stating, ”Courtney Love is an incredibly astute individual. During one of our recording sessions, Billy Corgan entered with a distinctly gloomy demeanor that was dampening the atmosphere.”

A Bold Decision
At that time, both Perry and Corgan had established collaborative histories with Love. Perry had co-written tracks for love’s 2004 solo project, America’s Sweetheart, and contributed to Hole’s 2010 album, Nobody’s Daughter. Meanwhile, Corgan had previously worked on Hole’s acclaimed 1998 release, Celebrity Skin, and had a romantic history with Love prior to her marriage to Kurt Cobain in 1992.
“As Courtney looked on in disbelief, I told him: ‘You’re acting like you’re the best thing to happen to rock music. Your energy is off. I need you to leave my studio.’”

Perry did not disclose which album the session was for,but she noted that her decision left both Corgan and Love taken aback.
“Courtney and Billy share a rich history, but my band was adamant: ‘We can’t work with him,’” Perry recounted. “Eventually, I stepped into the control room, looked at Billy, and said: ‘You need to go, man.’”
“Billy was stunned and exited the studio,” she added.
Surprise Reactions
Perry mentioned that Love was equally shocked by her bold move. “Courtney was amazed that I had the guts to kick him out and thought it was quite daring,” Perry explained. “then it hit me, ‘Oh, she’s actually quite soft!’ While she projects toughness-and she is intimidating-deep down, she craves kindness and affection, and she has a protective facade.”

Looking Ahead
Despite the incident, Perry expressed her admiration for Love and her enthusiasm for her return to the music scene. Love recently shared insights about her upcoming album during an appearance on Corgan’s podcast, The Magnificent Others, mentioning contributions from former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur and Will Sergeant.
“I have immense respect for Courtney and cherish the moments we’ve shared,” Perry stated. “The world is ready for Courtney Love’s comeback, and I eagerly anticipate her new album because she is truly one of a kind.”
Perry has never hesitated to voice her opinions. In a recent chat with Guitar Player, she also called out Third Eye Blind’s Stephan Jenkins for allegedly fabricating a story about their early collaboration before either achieved fame. “I have no idea what he’s talking about. That never happened,” Perry asserted. “Honestly, he’s full of it. I’m not surprised he would make up such a tale, but it’s simply not true.”
Perry’s latest album, Let It die, was released on May 8, marking her first solo project in over 25 years.
