Reviving the Blues: Samantha Fish Highlights Five Guitarists Shaping the Future
Samantha Fish is optimistic about the future of blues guitar, confidently identifying five exceptional musicians who are at the forefront of this musical movement.
The Kansas City-based guitarist, who has garnered acclaim from industry legends like Joe bonamassa,Slash, and Devon Allman, has spotlighted a select group of peers who are passionately carrying the blues-rock legacy into a fresh era. Leading her list are the remarkable Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and the legendary Derek Trucks.
“I just wrapped up a tour with Christone Kingfish Ingram, and he’s truly phenomenal,” she shared with Guitar World. The duo recently performed together at slash’s S.E.R.P.E.N.T.festival, sharing the stage with notable artists such as Warren Haynes, Grace Bowers, Larkin Poe, and Eric Gales.
Fish’s admiration for Trucks is even more profound. “Derek Trucks is one of the greatest guitarists out there,” she asserts.”His talent transcends blues; he’s simply exceptional.”
Trucks has been a performer since childhood, landing his first paid gig at just 11 years old and playing in blues clubs with the iconic Buddy Guy before he turned 13. These formative experiences taught him invaluable lessons about live performance.

As for Fish, she has released ten albums that have substantially influenced her life and distinctive guitar style. Among her top picks, she humorously notes, “Who doesn’t have a Rolling Stones record in their top 10?” however, she also highlights an unexpected choice: the MC5’s Kick Out the Jams.
“I discovered this album relatively recently,” she explains. “While working on my album Chills & Fever, I began exploring the Detroit rock and soul scene. This exploration coincided with a personal musical evolution, leading me to Kick Out the Jams.
“The MC5 were pioneers of punk, and that resonates deeply with me. Once you dive into their music, it captivates you. This album had a profound impact on me during a time when I craved something powerful.”

Fish has also shared the five most pivotal riffs that have shaped her musical journey, noting that one particular R.L. Burnside track served as a four-minute lesson in groove.
I believe Derek Trucks is one of the greatest guitarists, not just in blues, but in any genre.
– Samantha Fish
Fish advocates for contemporary blues musicians to innovate rather than merely preserve the genre. In a conversation with Guitar World last August, she emphasized that blues has always thrived through artists willing to challenge the status quo.
“When Muddy waters and Howlin’ Wolf electrified their sound, many dismissed it as not being blues. Yet, that’s now considered the gold standard. It’s essential for artists to push boundaries and discover their unique voices,” she stated.
“Of course, there’s concern about audience retention and growth, which is part of the business. However, ultimately, it’s crucial to create art that you can stand behind. Everything else tends to fall into place.”
