Dweezil Zappa recently shared a captivating tale about his unforgettable encounter with the legendary Eddie Van Halen when he was just 12 years old.
This remarkable moment is a dream come true for any aspiring young guitarist. After an unexpected phone call, the iconic musician arrived at Zappa’s home, where he personally guided the young guitarist through the intricacies of classics like Eruption and Mean Street. Dweezil has as recounted these invaluable lessons on his YouTube channel.
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Van Halen also produced dweezil’s debut single, My Mother Is a space cadet, and generously lent him one of his own guitars for a middle school talent show performance of Runnin’ With the Devil. During this time, he provided Dweezil with crucial coaching to help him overcome a few hiccups.
When Dweezil called to return the guitar—a Kramer model from the era before Van Halen’s collaboration with the brand was publicly known—Eddie surprised him by saying he could keep it.
In a recently resurfaced segment from Dweezil’s appearance on Gibson TV’s The Collection, he narrates the entire story of how he met Van Halen and acquired one of his Kramers.

As Zappa prepared for his middle school talent show, his bandmates were struggling during their soundcheck.
“Not only was I hitting the wrong chord, but my guitar was also out of tune,” Dweezil recalls.
In an astounding twist, Van Halen, who had somehow managed to attend the soundcheck, rushed home to retrieve one of his guitars.He noticed a few mistakes and stepped in to guide Dweezil.
“The guitar was originally cream-colored with an orange lightning bolt,reminiscent of shazam,” Dweezil describes. “He handed me the guitar, pointed out my errors, and stood behind me, counting off with the band while demonstrating the pick slides and everything else. It was an astonishing experience.”
The next day, Dweezil called to express his gratitude and mentioned returning the guitar. Van Halen replied, “No, you can keep that guitar.”
“So, I kept the guitar and painted it as a tribute to the Schwinn bicycle-style designs of Van Halen’s guitars.I did this when I was just 13,” he adds.
