A Tour to Remember
The Beat tour of 2024 marked a important moment in the guitar community,as it saw Steve Vai break his long-standing reluctance to join supergroups,participating in a collaboration with members of king Crimson. This extensive tour presented numerous challenges, including mastering the intricate parts composed by Robert Fripp, who even offered advice to Vai just two shows in. Though, the hurdles didn’t stop at the music; backstage issues were equally daunting.
Unexpected Challenges in Dubai
During a one-off performance in Dubai, MacArthur faced a critical situation when the band’s gear failed to arrive. “We flew from Los Angeles to London, and upon landing in Dubai at 1 AM, we discovered that none of our equipment made it,” he recounted. “with a show scheduled for the next day and no instruments in sight, we were determined not to cancel. The question loomed: How could I make this work for Steve Vai?”
The Show Must Go on
True to the adage, the show must go on, and MacArthur was not about to give up.“Fortunately, I had some gear with me as carry-on, and I scoured every music store in the area. With help from my contacts at Ibanez, I managed to piece together enough equipment in about four hours for a soundcheck and the performance,” he explained, still in disbelief at the whirlwind of events.
A Memorable Performance Against All Odds
“It turned out to be an incredible show! It was one of those trial-by-fire moments where you find yourself in a foreign land, scrambling to pull everything together at the last minute,” he added. After the concert, MacArthur and Vai shared a moment of reflection, marveling at the successful outcome of what could have been a disaster.
Innovative Solutions with Boss Pedals
MacArthur’s ingenuity was evident in the makeshift pedalboard he created for Vai, utilizing Boss pedals like the CH-1 Super Chorus and two DD-7 Digital Delays. “They worked perfectly and are always reliable. You can find them anywhere,” he noted, contrasting this setup with the meticulously crafted rig they had originally planned, which featured a Fractal amp modeler at its core.
Adapting to New Sounds
The Beat rig differed significantly from vai’s usual setup, incorporating a wah pedal, overdrive, MXR Phase 90, and a DigiTech Whammy DT. Additionally, an Xotic EP Booster provided a grittier sound that Vai favored during the tour, enhancing certain synth tones with an edgy boost.“We also employed a UA Max compressor specifically for the Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus amplifier,” MacArthur explained.
