Reviving a Classic: Andy Timmons’ Journey with a Vintage Stratocaster
Andy Timmons, a genre-blending guitar virtuoso, has openly shared his extensive collection of guitars, which began with an Elektra Les Paul he acquired back in 1976. Among his many discoveries, one particular find stands out in his quest for vintage instruments.
“I stumbled upon a 1965 Stratocaster on eBay that had been poorly refinished and had several issues, including missing chunks of wood,” Timmons recounts in an interview with Guitarist.
“The previous owner didn’t treat this guitar well, which made it quite affordable. The original pickups were still intact,so I thought,‘Why not take a chance on it?’”
After purchasing the guitar,Timmons enlisted the help of a luthier to strip it down to its original finish,revealing the classic ‘burst beneath the red paint. Unfortunately, years of neglect meant the original finish was beyond saving. Instead, Timmons opted for a complete transformation of the instrument.

“I had him refinish it to resemble the iconic white Strat that Jimi Hendrix played or the one featured on the cover of Jeff Beck’s Wired album,” he explains.
“And you know what? It might just be the best-sounding Strat I own. It has a unique character that sets it apart. It turned out to be a wise investment, as it’s a reliable guitar that I’ve used on numerous recordings and continue to play frequently.”
