“Rest in peace, John. Your kindness will always be remembered,” Bonamassa shared on social media. “I first met him on New Year’s Eve in 1991 when he opened for Buddy Guy at Irving Plaza in new York. I was invited to join Buddy that night, and John graciously handed me his vintage 1930s National guitar, which was a challenge to play. He was a true musical ambassador, a brilliant artist, and a legend in his own right. His absence is a significant loss for the blues community.”
In 2011, Hammond was honored with induction into the Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame. Just two years earlier, he received a Grammy nomination for best Traditional Blues Album for Rough & Tough, with several of his other works also recognized by the Grammy Academy.

For a week, they played with my band at the Gaslight Café,” Hammond reminisced.
