Rush’s New Drummer Faces a ‘Yikes’ Challenge with Iconic Track
Rush has made an unexpected choice for Neil Peart’s drumming legacy, bringing in Anika Nilles, a German fusion drummer, to fill the iconic role. Rush’s decision to conclude their touring career after the 2015 R40 tour was heavily influenced by Peart, who passed away from cancer in 2020. Lifeson shared with Rolling Stone that Peart had found it increasingly challenging to perform at his own high standards, leading to the farewell tour being a dignified exit.
Despite this, the remaining members of Rush seem eager to continue their musical journey. After Lee issued a decisive ultimatum to Lifeson, the duo committed to reviving the band.
nilles was brought on board following a recommendation from Lee’s guitar technician, who had previously collaborated with her during her tour with Jeff Beck. Her diverse musical background provided a fresh perspective, which the band welcomed.
However, stepping into the shoes of a legendary band comes with its own set of challenges. “Its captivating to see Anika as she becomes familiar with the songs,” Lee remarked in an interview with Planet Rock. “The initial experience of playing it for the first time and figuring out which parts are essentially Neil Peart’s and which she can make her own has been a joy to witness.”
Yet, the learning process was not without its bumps. “She wasn’t very familiar with our music. She recognized a few of the major tracks, and naturally, every drummer knows of Neil and his legacy,” Lee added. “When we were about to play ‘tom Sawyer’ for the first time, she paused and said, ‘Yikes.I’m not sure I want to tackle this one.’”
Originally featured on Rush’s groundbreaking 1981 album Moving Pictures, “Tom sawyer” has become a defining anthem for the band and a staple in their live performances. During the recording, Lee famously switched from his usual Rickenbacker 4001 to a Fender Jazz Bass he found in a pawn shop, while Lifeson later admitted to improvising the guitar solo, favoring spontaneity over perfection.
The single peaked at number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 25 in the U.K., but these figures hardly reflect the song’s profound cultural meaning or the weight it carries for any drummer stepping into Peart’s role.
“She felt a bit anxious due to the song’s importance,” Lee explained. “but we discussed it and worked through it. The fills weren’t the challenging part for her; she could handle those easily.It’s about capturing the essence of the groove.”

As for the future, Lee has not dismissed the idea of creating new music alongside Lifeson. Thay have also enlisted keyboardist Loren Gold, who has toured with Roger Daltrey of The Who and Don Felder, to enhance their live performances and alleviate some of the multitasking Lee managed in Rush’s original lineup.
Currently, Lee envisions any upcoming tour as a celebration of Rush’s legacy. However, if the chemistry remains strong, this unexpected new chapter could lead to fresh musical endeavors.
