“It took three years of crafting guitars for him,” Smith shares when discussing the timeline of convincing Santana. “The first guitar he called an accident of God. The second one, he simply labeled an accident. By the third, he was silent.”
“By the fifth guitar, he finally called me and said, ‘Alright, you’re a guitar maker.’ Essentially,the first one was so remarkable that he couldn’t believe it was real,” Smith continues. “It was as if someone had written him a hit song, and he was skeptical about the next one being just as good. But after the fifth,he was convinced. He made me earn his trust, which I found to be very grounded.”
