Becky Baldwin’s Nerve-Wracking Debut with Tony iommi: A Journey from Doubt to Triumph
After a two-decade hiatus, Tony Iommi is set to unveil his first solo album, From the Dark, later this year. The legendary Black Sabbath guitarist has curated a talented ensemble that brings a genuine band dynamic to the project.
first Impressions: A nerve-wracking Experience
For bassist Becky Baldwin, stepping into the studio with Iommi was a daunting challenge. The Birmingham-based musician candidly admits that she feared she had already sabotaged her opportunity before the session even concluded.
Reflecting on that pivotal day eight months later, Baldwin shares her anxiety about recording alongside one of her idols. “This photo was taken at the end of our first recording session,on the day we met,” she posted on Instagram. “I was overwhelmed by the honor and so nervous to perform in front of Tony without any prior preparation.”

“I was convinced they would seek out another bassist as soon as I left,” she recalls. “I even asked, ’Can we take a quick photo together, just in case I never get this chance again?’”
A Reassuring Response
To baldwin’s relief, Iommi responded with laughter. “He chuckled and said, ‘You’ll be back here in two weeks for the next session!’ But even then, I struggled to believe him,” she admits.
True to his word, Iommi welcomed Baldwin back to finalize the bass tracks for From the Dark. Now,she proudly stands alongside drummer Karl Brazil and vocalist Jorn Lande, whose powerful vocals evoke the iconic era of Ronnie James dio in Black Sabbath.
The album’s lead single, “World Alone,” was released last week, offering fans a glimpse of the new lineup.
“Fast forward eight months, and here we are,” Baldwin reflects. “The initial nerves have dissipated, and I successfully recorded the remaining bass parts for Tony’s remarkable album. I am incredibly proud to be part of this project, and we are thrilled with the outcome. I finally believe it’s all real!”
Finding the Right Fit
baldwin’s inclusion in the album was not a foregone conclusion. Iommi initially sought to collaborate with his longtime Black Sabbath partner, Geezer Butler, for this project.
“I wanted him on board, but he was unavailable,” Iommi explains. “He’s working on his own album and couldn’t make it to England.I was eager to get this done and released.”
Recognizing Baldwin’s talent,Iommi saw her as the perfect alternative. “Becky lives in Birmingham, is an excellent player, and embodies Geezer’s style,” he notes. “I thought, ‘Let’s give it a shot.’ And she impressed me.”

A Legendary Collaboration
While Baldwin is the newest addition to Iommi’s musical ensemble, the album also features one of his long-time collaborators: Brian may of Queen. May is the sole guest artist on From the Dark, continuing a friendship that has spanned decades.
“We’ve worked together on a few tracks before,” Iommi tells Rolling Stone. “He’s a very close friend.”
May previously lent his guitar skills to Black Sabbath’s album Headless cross, contributing a solo to the track “When Death Calls.” More than ten years later, he reunited with Iommi for the guitarist’s 2000 solo project, Iommi, performing alongside dave Grohl on “Goodbye Lament.”
Their latest collaboration, “Death Awake,” continues this musical partnership, although Iommi hints that there coudl have been even more contributions. “I did ask him if he wanted to play on additional tracks,” he recalls. “He said, ‘No, no. Yoru solos are great. I don’t need to play.’”
