“This guitar was unearthed during one of our many trips to Los Angeles,” Donal recalls. ”We had only a few hours to spare, and Rory expressed a desire to check out a guitar store he was familiar with, called Valley Sound. I warned him about the parking situation, but he was eager to go.”
“I dropped him off at the store, and he assured me he wouldn’t be long. I decided to wait in the car, feeding quarters into the parking meter to avoid a ticket while trying to keep myself entertained.”

“Visiting guitar shops in places like LA was always amusing. Other customers woudl frequently enough recognize Rory and start playing his riffs at full volume, trying to impress him,” Donal chuckles. “While I sometimes found it distracting, Rory took it all in stride. I was outside, growing increasingly bored as I waited.”
A Pawn Shop Discovery
“As I sat there, I noticed we were parked next to a pawn shop. I thought, ‘Maybe they have some guitar cases.’ Rory had been collecting guitars, but many lacked proper cases, which was a constant source of frustration for us.”
“I decided to kill some time and went inside to inquire about guitar cases. The shopkeeper asked if I was interested in buying a guitar, but I quickly explained that I was short on cash.”
The Gretsch Corvette: A Bargain Find
“I spotted a case that looked promising, but the shopkeeper informed me that I’d need to purchase the guitar to get it. I looked at the instrument and saw it was a Gretsch Corvette. I asked the price, and he quoted $500. However,I was primarily interested in the case,so I negotiated him down to $150.”
“After securing the deal, I placed the guitar in the trunk and continued to feed the parking meter while waiting for Rory. When he finally returned, looking disappointed about his own search, I revealed my find. ‘You might be mad at me for this,’ I said, ‘but I found a guitar… and the case is probably worth more than the guitar itself.’”
“Curious, Rory asked what it was, and when I told him it was a Gretsch, he eagerly looked in the trunk. after a quick glance,he shut it and said,’Let’s get out of here before they realize what they’ve sold you!’”
